Block Party - those that have attended BPs in the past (Cost related)
For those of you that have attended block parties in the past, if there was a fee to attend, how much was it? Was the fee per person? Per family? And what was included?
Thanks!

Re: Block Party - those that have attended BPs in the past (Cost related)
Last year was the first time our block did one. We paid over $100 per house. That included the permit, a DJ, a bounce house, a huge 2 story inflatable slide, cotton candy machine, Rita's Ice Truck, dunk tank. I feel like there may have been something else but I'm blanking on that. There was some money left over and they had the DJ pull two house numbers out of a bowl at the end of the night and those houses split the money.
I haven't heard anything about one this year.

Re: Block Party - those that have attended BPs in the past (Cost related)
Do you guys have a lot of households/families that attend?
As of right now we're asking $35 of each family and $5 per person that a non resident of the household (friends of the kids, extended family), but I'm questioning whether we should ask for more money. We have a decent size neighborhood where we extend the block party to over 150 households. In the past they've charged $25, so I'm afraid if I up it to $50 (or more), the neighbors may get sticker shock.
In the past, $25 covered a DJ, bounce house, cotton candy machine and port-a-potty. I think the ice cream truck comes by, but I believe that was his choice, not at our expense. I supply the glowsticks ;) and the DJ was also a family member of one of the neighbors, so we got a pretty big discount.
Currently we're scheduling the party for July and I'm afraid if we end up with a low turnout that the $35 fee just won't cover the expenses.

On my block, the guy who organizes it puts a flyer in everyone's mailbox with the date, asking if you are participating that year. After he finds out how many people are participating, then he figures out how much to charge per household and collects $.
We pay per household, not based on how many guests. It covers permit, breakfast, DJ, some kind of bouncy attraction/waterslide, and italian ices.
ETA: I think last year we payed about $85 per household.

Has your block done this before (charge guests to come)? I would think that would be pretty difficult since some homes may have many guests and it would get costly. Plus you never know how many people will show up.

Re: Block Party - those that have attended BPs in the past (Cost related)
We have a very small block and only about 8 of us participated. Each year the cost was a bit different. The most recent was 85.00 per house. We didn't charge our guests, but many people brought food / desserts in which helped the cost a lot. We didn't do one last year b/c of the cost. We also do raffles, contests which we then split 50 / 50 with the winner. Any remaining money goes back in the pot to use to offset the following year's cost.

Re: Block Party - those that have attended BPs in the past (Cost related)
Our block does one every year and they only charge per household. Guests of the homeowner are not charged anything.
Last year it was $80 per household and that included the work, DJ, Waterslide, Bouncy castle, Ices, Clown, etc.
Many of the homeowners on the block thought the price was too high (there are a lot of 2 family homes on our block so it ended up being $160 per house)and not too many participated.
This year they are doing the block party again but it's minus all the bells and whistles - $10 per household will cover just the basic permits. Entertainment for your guests to be provided by you. While it's different then what we are used to I'm actually in favor of this because my guests don't usually participate in all the pricey rides and stuff anyways!

No, they've charged $25 per family/household for as long as I can remember, but the DJ was little to no expense. Now I'm expecting a $400 plus expense that I need to add. I'd also love to add another inflatable for the kids if the budget allows.
The reason why we're asking for more money if others are invited is because residents of our civic association have expressed displeasure with families from other neighborhoods attending our block party. Our block party committee agreed that we don't take issue with others attending, especially if they're friendly with families from our neighborhood, as long as they pay a fee to help cover expenses. A lot of families also invite their extended family (siblings and their children) so a family of 5 can quickly jump to a family of 10 with their guests. We're also going to be selling wristbands at the entrance in case we have last minute attendees. I'm just afraid to make other families pay a larger fee for "guests" they didn't invite.

I can see charging more if you have a small block, but I think my neighbors might question the idea of charging $50 when we have so many neighbors, although I don't really have any idea how many actually participate. I'm just nervous about not being able to cover expenses if for some reason we have a low turnout. (Although I have been told that that many people, including new families, have been inquiring about the block party.)
We don't supply any food or beverages because of the size of our neighborhood, so families are expected to bring their own, but we do supply the grill. We do have raffles and games. In the past winners received gift cards with the remainder of money going back to the Block Party budget for the following year.

Re: Block Party - those that have attended BPs in the past (Cost related)
I believe we paid $50.00 per household. That covered the permit, dunk tank, clown, & DJ. Some families provided additional entertainment/activities. A few houses have bouncers so they were out, one house did face painting, two basketball hoops were pulled out, we did stickers/tatoos etc. etc. We have a community desert table that everyone contributes too. Everyone does their own food & drink and invites who ever they want. Its a great day. We didnt get enough participation last year I hope its revived this year.

Now I'm wondering if we should just ask for $50 per household and write off the idea of requesting additional money for guests.

I think the permit fee is at least $100 and we have to be able to block off our road from traffic.
And I'm not about to eat the expense of a bounce house and DJ.

Guess I'll throw that idea past the committee to see what they think.

Re: Block Party - those that have attended BPs in the past (Cost related)
My block is $100 per house to participate, but they go ALL OUT. Its like a carnival out there. There is really no way to keep track of additional guests though. The $$ usually goes towards DJ, bounce castle, kid's entertainment (clown, face painting, etc), raffle prizes, and treats such as cotton candy or ice shaving. Every family is responsible for their own food.
That being said, there is really nothing stopping the people who didn't pay from participating. They can set up a table and sit in the street with everyone else...and nobody is going to tell their 6 yr old they can't have cotton candy b/c their parents didn't pay the $100!!

We're using wristbands because in past years, we've had a number of "crashers", some of which who stole alcohol out of neighbors coolers, went pool hopping in backyards and from I understand, caused some minor damage to property.
Nobody would begrudge a family or children from participating, but when you have multiple families who didn't pay a dime, many of which aren't even from your neighborhood, it's kind of unfair to your own neighbors.
But I am wondering if it makes more sense to just charge more money per family as others have done and write off the idea of requesting more money for guests. We'll just ask how many people each household plans on having come to the party and give them that number of wristbands.

Just wanted to say thanks for your input guys!!!
Looks like my husband and I are primarily running the show and we'd just like to see a successful block party, one where more and more neighbors want to participate each year.
The irony is that I probably won't even be at the block party this year. As it stands, I'll most likely be in the hospital recovering from a c-section. (Unless I can convince my OB to move my date forward. )

how would i go about organizing a block party for my neighborhood? tia
We're fortunate in that this something that's kind of been established, but this is the first year where the location is changing and a new crew (myself, DH and a committee) are running it.
My DH spoke with the neighbors on the road that we would need to block off to see if they would be ok with the idea of having a block party there. So far we've gotten the ok from all but one home (we haven't been able to reach him). Once we get the clear from all the homes, we'll obtain their signatures and submit them for a permit to close off the road. (I heard this can take 1-2 weeks.) After that it's about notifying the families, collecting funds, booking the DJ/bounce house, etc..
