Booster seat for a 6 1/2 year old?
My MIL is driving up to NY tomorrow w/ our 6 1/2 year old niece. She mentioned that she has to pick up our niece's booster seat for the car in the morning.
Isn't she too old for a booster seat?
I don't have kids yet so maybe I am just clueless.

My son is 6 1/2 and he's in a booster. So is my 8 1/2 year old niece. It's a height thing really...over 4 feet, 9 inches I believe. My DS is only 4 ft. 1 in.

Re: Booster seat for a 6 1/2 year old?
My son is 8 and he sits in a booster seat. He'll be there until he's literally too heavy to be in it.
From The NYS Dept of Health:
The law requires children under age four be restrained in federally approved child safety seats when riding in a motor vehicle. If the child weighs more than 40 pounds and is under age four the child may be restrained in an appropriate child restraint system, which includes the use of a booster seat. Safety experts recommend children age 12 and under ride properly restrained in the back seat. This position is safest as they are less likely to be injured in a frontal crash or from a deploying air bag. For more information about booster seats, contact the NYSDOH Bureau of Injury Prevention at (518) 473-1143. Additional information can be obtained by visiting the website for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Governor's Traffic Safety Committee at http://www.safeny.com

Re: Booster seat for a 6 1/2 year old?
American Academy of Pediatrics
Age Type of Seat General Guideline Infants Infant seats and rear-facing convertible seats All infants should always ride rear-facing until they are at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds.
Toddlers/Preschoolers Convertible seats It is best to ride rear-facing as long as possible. Children 1 year of age and at least 20 pounds can ride forward-facing.
School-aged children Booster seats Booster seats are for older children who have outgrown their forward-facing car safety seats. Children should stay in a booster seat until adult belts fit correctly (usually when a child reaches about 4' 9" in height and is between 8 and 12 years of age).
Older children Seat belts Children who have outgrown their booster seats should ride in a lap and shoulder belt in the back seat until 13 years of age.
This "rule" is mainly a height rule. If the person (of any age) is too short, the belt will be sitting on their neck. The belt needs to be on their shoulder and across their chest to be the most effective. Since the booster just adjusts the height of DC, having it or not isn't an age issue, because it's the same seat belt, just positioned better.
