Borrowing China

If a close family member asked to borrow your china and it was still in it's boxes because you haven't used it yet, would you let them? This person needs 6 settings because there will be 18 people attending this event. It's for a special occasion, but dinner will be served buffet style. How would you feel about it?

Re: Borrowing China

China for buffet style meal makes me nervous. I wouldn't want people walking around with my good plates!

If it was easily replaceable (china currently sold in stores), I would gladly lend it to them.

If it was an antique set or hard to replace the pieces, then I would be less inclined.

Re: Borrowing China

no I wouldn't lend it before I used it

you can go to bed bath and beyond and get very inexpensive white plates- they look nice enough

I would never want the responsible of borrowing something breakable from someone

There are many other things I'd be willing to loan to someone, but that's not one of them!

no way! not unless I have used it.

Re: Borrowing China

no way! good china costs thousands!!!

I had a large formal party when I still lived at home.... I didn't have enough glasses, but mom was nervous to give up her best glasses... Mom just bought inexpensive champagne glasses.... why can't your friend do that? just buy inexpensive china that looks formal......

Absolutely NOT.

My reason... my mom died tragically when I was 8 and it is one of the few posessions I have of her. It's way too precious to me and will someday be my DD's.

I'd buy someone a service of china before lending mine out.

Re: Borrowing China

Never. Sorry, it's mine, for use at my parties only. Maybe I don't share that well, but I'd never lend it out to anyone - and it's not b/c I don't trust them.

I'd certainly never use it for a buffet - at my house or elsewhere.

Re: Borrowing China

tell them to go to Linens and Things and pick up a party plate pack---12 dinner plates---nice looking china--for $19.95

(i would NEVER lend out my china to ANYONE)

that is what my mom did this year cause she hosted turkey day and a lot of ppl were coming and she didn't have enough matching plates---so she got those...worked out great!

Service for 12 separates

it was on sale when my mom bought the pack--but still $30 for nice plates for buffet style party is good..plus she could get matching salada plates and mugs too for $25 each

Amen and I have to say that I'd be embarrassed to ask someone to borrow their china!

Good luck with your decision..

Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with it. My china is still in boxes, never used. Obviously I don't have a deep connection to it, so if something breaks it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Also, I have 14 full place settings of my china. If more people than that ever come to my house for dinner, we're using plastic plates. Chat Icon

I agree. Just hold them accountable if any damage is done, and if needs to be replaced, make them do it.
