Can you do everything that the people you supervise do (workwise)? In other words - if any one of your employees were out for more than a few days could you step in and do that job in a pinch if you needed to?
Just curious!

yes.
I think cross-training is very important.
I do know some managers that are not able to do what their subordinates do.

Well I am not working at the moment (home with DS) but in all of my supervisory roles I was able to do the jobs of my subordinates.
I once worked for a director who had NO clue how to do my job or anyone else's. It was such a poorly run department and it ended up getting absorbed into a better-run department.

I have a team of specialists - graphic designers, instructional designers and trainers - that have very specific skill sets and certifications.
It's my job to set the strategy and direct them in their work, not to be able to do the detail.
I understand what they do and can support them, but I can't DO it.
