Re: Did I poison my baby?
Posted by JoJo103
you need to relax i gave my daughter advent bottles for 18 months before this report came out so how do you think i feel. i didnt lose sleep over it. i was brought up on plastic bottles. there is tons of stuff you use everyday that uses plastic too. tupperware, plastic containers your food is in. the report said that if the contents were heated at a very high temperate then there is a chance that it can leak in. i heated my daughters milk in the micro to take the chill out and then poured it into the bottle so we did not run a risk. your getting yourself worked up for no reason. there is no way to know if it leaks or not. switch to glass if you feel safer. there are going to be alot more bigger issues you are going to deal with when you have a child so i hope that you learn not to freak out about everything. its not easy being parent but to make yourself sick over something you don't know happened or not is plain dumb. and to post a topic about did i poison my baby is scary.
Thanks for your response but first of all this is my second child so I am aware of how "difficult" it is to be a parent..The fact is that we do not know how harmful BPA is to infants..that is what is scaring me.. I'm sure you were nervous about your daughter when you found out but how would you have felt if your concerns about this (or anything else for that matter) were completely dismissed the way you dismissed mine?
you are right to be concerned....we all are. I have used avent since day one but I do not warm them in the microwave.

Re: Did I poison my baby?
jo, my point is that the study doesnt really say definitely if it can leak or not and why get yourself worked up over it. i have all my daughters advent bottles and with my second i dont know if i'll use it. but like i said there are tons of products that affect us everyday and until they can pinpoint which item and what we can do to prevent it why not switch to something that is safer and then wait for more info to come out. look at the study on juice in children how its bad for children and that too much sugar can cause obesity. then they came out recently the wsj had an article that says that juice is actually good for your kids and all the benefits. my point is that we dont know the dangers and life is too short to worry about everything.
i never said you are a bad parent or that you dont use good judgement i was saying that will all the things we will go through with raising children lets not get upset on something we really dont know the effects of until we can get the correct information.

Re: Did I poison my baby?
I have to lean to Corrine's way of thinking on this one. If they were even fairly sure that this was harmful, all Avent bottles would have been pulled from the shelves by now. I use them and have continued using them, but like someone else said, I no longer heat anything in the microwave. If your DC has been using Avent for 18 months and you haven't notice any health problems, then I think it's safe to say that DC is fine. You've already switched bottles and that's really the most you can do.

I still use them....When they pull them off the shelf is when I will stop using them
Same here, and same for Dr. Browns. Who heats their bottles to an extremely high temp anyways with formula in it..I've always heated to take the chill off.
The studies are inconclusive, but so are so many others just scare new parents and scare us as people.
ANything that mother nature doesn't produce herself CAN HARM US! If we lived by that, lets all go live back in caves, make our own clothes, eat berries and hunt our food.
There are risks with everything that is man made- you just have to weigh risk vs benefit and make your decision from there.
TO the OP-I wouldn't worry right now or lose sleep, i know it's scary when these studies come out. But just try to do what's best for you and your family
ETA: HOnestly, does everyone think our government and these companies would hide or misconstrue facts so we would poison our kids. IF there was a conclusive risk, they'd be pulled off shelves.
JUst like all this Lead paint stuff going on now...alot of the recalls right now are proactive, no kids have gotten sick.

I think that Corinne's "tone" was misunderstood. This is an internet message board, I think that what she meant as "relax, Iam sure everything is ok, I gave them to my dd too" was misconstrued as uncaring, when that is NOT how she meant it.
Again, I still use Avent, if the risk was SO bad, they'd be off the shelves.

Re: Bottles and BPA
switch to glass.
I don't trust what the government says is or is not safe at what levels...
Lets look at cigarettes- how long did it take them to admit they caused cancer?
or global warming- how long did it take them to admit it existed?
Do what you feel comfortable with... but if you don't feel comfortable using avent anymore- get rid of them and get glass.

I feel the same way. This controversy has been going on for several years. It keeps going away and popping up. My feeling is you have to do what you think is right for your baby. There are too many instances of the government being slow to react and of corporations not voluntarily pulling products that may be harmful. I'm just not comfortable relying on them to do the right thing. It's easy enough to just switch.

Re: Bottles and BPA
The reason I switched to Drop-Ins is because the authors of Baby Bargains actually took the time to send out a RETRACTION for the latest issue of their book. They changed their A+ rating on Dr. Brown's to an F due to BPA leaching.
Also- in my research, I found that the leaching doesn't only occur when you heat milk/formula in the bottles. Apparently, just from sterilizing and washing at high temps will cause the plastic to break down over time and possibly allow for toxic leaching.
This is MY opinion only- but I just feel that with other "safer" options, I feel better no longer using the suspected bottles.

thats what I was going to ask as well, or at least the doctor might know what direction to point you in
Either way - come back and post so the other mothers will know as well
