Braces/Invisalign anyone?

Fh has bad teeth, not bad per se, but he has a major underbite and gaps in his teeth and for some stupid reason his parents never rbought him to an orthodontist and his dentist never sent him to one.

So he went for the first time toay and the first thing he says when he calls me is "I hate my parents. Why didn't they give me braces when i was 8?!" Chat Icon So now to to correct all of this he has 2 options, clear braces, which the doctor will take off before the wedding and then put them back on, and invisalign.

The downside to the invisalign is that they have these graduated "steps" and you order all of the steps at once, so if something goes wrong, or you decide to stop, you can't, and the dentist can't adjust it, so it's a risk, plus you have to pay for more of it up front than the regular braces *the price difference is only about $400).

has anyone had braces or invisalign as an adult? What would you reccomend? What was your experience?

Re: Braces/Invisalign anyone?

I have never had either but I can answer your question from patients I have. I am a dental hygienist. Well, you can get quicker results with the clear braces especially if they use the bands. Invisalign works well too but you have to wear them and be diligent for them to work. Keeping the teeth clean will be easier with the invisalign but from what you are mentioning with his bite Im surprised they offered the invisalign.
If it was me personally I would go with the clear braces. Once the hygienist shows you how to care for them, its a piece of cake. Good luck.

Thanks so much. From what FH said, it seems like the dentist felt the clear braces were a much better idea. I'm just afraid wearing braces will be a really big adjustment for him to make.

Re: Braces/Invisalign anyone?

I had braces when I was 8-11, then again before my wedding on just the bottom because my two front bottom teeth had shifted. I wasn't offered invisalign as an option because of how far apart the front two were. I'm surprised he was offered invisalign if they are bad; usually that's just for minor changes.

I had the clear braces for about 9 mos. before my wedding. It was PAINFUL. I think it hurts more as an adult every time they are tightened. Now they are perfect, and I guess I am glad I did it, but it was a few thousand just for the bottom and it was painful. I had clear, and now I have a permanent retainer on the bottom.

ETA: It is hard to get used to, and I had to make a lot of food changes. No carrots, apples, bagels, etc.

I dont think so, I have a ton of adult patients with braces and I ask them all the time, they said the first time getting them on was annoying and uncomfortable and the first tightening visit, after that they said its nothing. I think he will do great with them.

My insurance covered a bit of it, but it was the same cost as the metal braces. The bottom alone for me wound up costing $3000 after insurance.

My friend had Invisalign - and loved them. Worked wonders on her teeth before her wedding. I have to say after years of seeing her smile with her mouth closed, she's finally happy when smiling for pictures - and it shows.

Not to answer for her, but for one example, FH's orthodontist said it would be $5600 in all, but i think that includes some extra work on the bottom plus removing and replacing them for the wedding

well it depends on what you need and how long. but average is anywhere around 6k to 10k numbers I have heard them give me when I asked. 1 adult patient only had them on the bottom and it cost him 6k. braces are expensive. HTH

this is soooooooo common!!!! some orthodontist wont put on permanent retainers b/c of the damage it does over the years to the bone structure under the gums b/c the average person does not use the floss threaders on a regular basis to keep them clean. If they shift a bit but not out of alignment you can use invisalign. if its out of the occlusal plane meaning out of position where you bite is affected invisalign is usually not the best choice, but there are some orthos who will take your money and say oh well we tried it didnt work, thats the down fall with invisalign, with braces you will never have that situation. your bite is always adjusted and your teeth will move into alignment.

Re: Braces/Invisalign anyone?

That's what he told FH about invisalign. If for some reason somethgn shiftsd the wrong way, he's stuck with the next "step" that won't fit or whatever, no room for adjustment.

oh dont be fooled by a dentist/doctor just b/c they have an office in an affluent area. Always go with recommedations.

I haven;t kissed a guy with braces since I was 16! My boyfriend had braces, and then one day got sick of them and ripped them off with a pair of pliers....

(he was a little crazy)

Re: Braces/Invisalign anyone?

There was an article in Newsday about 2-3 weeks ago about orthodontists who specialize in adults. The one that was highlighted was a Dr. Babalan in Melville. I have been meaning to call him and set up a consultation because my overbite has gotten really, really bad!!
