Brand new mommy question! Do I wake him to feed him?

We got home from the hospital with our Chat Icon 2 hours ago!

The nurse said he should eat at 11...When I asked if I should wake him to eat, she laughed and said he'll wake himself up by then.

Well, it's now 12:30, and he's still asleep! Last time he ate was 8AM in the hospital (he's FF only). Do I wake him? Or let him sleep? Chat Icon

Well, since she told you to, I probably would.

When you go for your next ped appointment ask them if they think you should wake him. If he is gaining, they probably will tell you to let him sleepChat Icon

They say never wake a sleeping baby... but if you don't he may be up all night and get his days and nights confused! I would leave him, see how he does at night, and take it from there.

Re: Brand new mommy question! Do I wake him to feed him?

I follow the "rule" never wake a sleeping baby. My two DDs did fine with that. If it were me, I'd let him sleep and feed him as soon as he wakes up.

See, she never told me TO wake him, she just said I wouldn't HAVE to because he would wake himself! So now I am all confused!

He gained almost a 1/2 lb. in the few days in the hospital, which is unusual since most babies lose weight, so they aren't too concerned with his weight...Chat Icon

Heck no.... LOL

but is he is sleeping longer than like 4 or 5 hours or so I would just because it is day time and you dont want him to be up all night.

agree completely dd confused day and night and i had to start to wake her bc she was sleeping 4 or 5hr stretches for naps...and then was tough at night with feeding the whole night through the minute i started waking her up then she connected being up more during hte day and sleeping more at night....but i would totally wait to wake dc up until dc goes beyond the 4 or 5hr mark

FF babies should be fed every 3-4 hours. My DD is only FF and we always wake her to keep her on a feeding schedule during the day. She has been sleeping through the night since about 4 weeks old with this method. GL!

Re: Brand new mommy question! Do I wake him to feed him?

I ALWAYS work DD up to feed- in the beginning they do need to eat- if she didn't wake up after at least 4 hours has passed since last feeding then I'd wake... I would do the same.

I think the never wake a sleeping baby doesn't hold when they are so newborn.
