Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

My own post about my baby being sick has me thinking.. how many “rules” do you break?

Here are my crimes:
“Nothing in the crib but the baby” – I have her monitor, a tin for her diapers, wipes warmer, various small toys and one stuffed animal. My excuse: She’s never alone in her crib. She’s also just barely beginning to grasp.

“No blankets on a baby” – I have all sorts of blankets we use. Nothing super heavy during the day but she’s always got a blanket over her legs at one point of the day. At night she’s got the exact same sheet/blanket layers we do. Sheet, thin comforter, Chenille type blanket all on top of a receiving blanket and all of this on top of her.

“Never keep the water running in the tub while your baby is in their tub” – I keep it running it provides a near mini humidifier, it keeps the air warm, it also keeps a nicely warmed flow of water for rinsing

“Don’t have plush or soft surfaces for baby to sleep on, firm is better” – She sleeps on our plush soft accent pillows in our living room. They aren’t down feather plush but they aren’t firm either. Sometimes we lay her out on a spare pillow we have. Its actually down substitute. She’s just big enough to squish the center and not roll as well as just long enough to have her feet actually off of it.

I think that’s it. I’m sure I break more rules and I’m sure I follow a ton more, but these are all I could remember right now. I don’t feel bad about the tub water, pillows or blanket but I do sometimes rethink the crib clutter.

Am I the only bad mommy?

I also use blankets.... if the room is cold and eryk is FINALLY sleeping after hours of me trying to get him to sleep, I would do anything to avoid waking him.... we just drop the blanket on top

we also don't contnually watch him while in the swing.... we just strap him in and let it go.....

otherwise we adhere to most rules

Re: Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

I co-slept (when she was older than six months)

I gave her cereal/introduced cereal at two months (the kid would literally be SCREAMING for food after her formula.

Let her watch tv before six months.

Please, there's plenty more. Each mothering style is different. Unless you're feeding your child crack or booze, I don't think you're going to "Mommy Jail" for going against the norm.

Re: Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

before he knew how to roll, i left him on the changing table all the time while i put his clothes away

if it's really cold i put a blanket over his lower half (but he is swaddled so that blanket isn't going anywhere)

and if he is being fussy but i have things to do, i leave him in his jumperoo with the TV on Chat Icon

Not to flame, but as a warning, I would remove the wipes warmer. I remember reading that certain models had started fires. Putting a warm electric appliance in the crib could start a fire and I would really worry about that.

Mine-
my kid watches more TV than he should and also started before he was 6 months.

I gave up on brushing his teeth. I know I should do it and I have tried, but it is a fight I never win.

I gave him a blanket and a stuffed toy in his crib before he was a year old.

I had to laugh at this too and was thinking the same thing haha Chat Icon

DD was out in front of the TV at a very early age (a couple of mths?) and still watches way more TV than she should at age 2.5

My DD refuses to sit in her chair and eat any meal...I chase her around all day popping food in her mouth or she wouldnt eat anything. Not starting a good habit, I know..but o well. Shes gata eat.

I used to take DD for a ride every single day in the car just to get her to nap. Thankfully, she now naps like a "normal" kid should.Chat Icon

used to walk away with her on the changing table all of the time to get things (before she learned how to roll of course)

Im sure theres more...LOL

I am perfect. My child is perfect. I know exactly what to do all the time and I do it right every time. See, I am a better mom than you, I love my child more than you love yours and I am generally superior. I would report you to CPS but my child is on a special pooping schedule and, seeing as I am perfect, he has never sat in a poop diaper for more than 17.5 seconds. I need to go change him. Let me know if you want to know which diapers and wipes I use, as it is obvious that you should use the same ones as me. Re: Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

Once my DD could understand simple commands, I let her remain on her changing table while I would grab things across the room. She is 23 months and still have never fallen off- she understands not to move til I get back.

AT 22 months or so, I have turned my back on her in the tub.

I let her climb on the activity center at the park that says ages 5 and above.

I am know- I am skirtting with danger here. Chat Icon

Re: Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

"Never keep the water running in the tub while your baby is in their tub" I didn't even know this was a rule.
DD loves to play with the water stream. It has fascinated her from day one. It would sincerely dissapoint her if I took it away. I just check the water temp constantly.

I also leave her on the changing table more than I should as I walk around her room - she hasn't rolled over yet and loves to play with a doll we leave there.

I also leave her in the swing even if I am not in the room. It gives me time to get things done.

TV - yeah that too.

I am sure they are a whole lot more.

Re: Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

today alone:
DS slept on his stomach all night, with a blanket, he's a month old

DD slept next to me in bed, with her head on a pillow, she's a month old too

Left older daughter on main level, by herself while i went downstairs to do laundry.
also left her alone with baby DD while went into the kitchen (not a good idea), also left her wandering around upstairs while i hopped into the shower.

bottle propped for one of the twins too.

and its only three o'clock...

Re: Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

Oh yeah.. I let her watch TV. Since she could she pretty colors she’s had it on. She sits in my lap and we catch up on Ellen’s show. I never got this really, what’s the difference from a TV to a mobile at this age, she can’t understand 3D and its just color in motion with sound.

Propped bottle? Ha, this is bad? I don’t know how I would have made it those first few months without propping the bottle up with a blanket under it so I could reach things and return blood to my arm.

I need to go buy a leather jacket that says “One Bad Momma”

I did naps on his stomach at 2 months. He wouldnt nap at all. But if i rolled him on his stomach and rubbed his back twice he passed out. It was nice while it lasted.
I took him out shopping right away.
I know there are more but those are the only 2 I can think of.

Re: Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

I don't even know where to start Chat Icon

He sleeps on his belly at night, ever since we started this he is sleeping 10 hour stretches so I'm not messing with it!!
We introduced rice cereal at 2 months. It has helped tremendously with his reflux.
He watches TV, the other day he was watching Oprah for about 30min and didn't make a peep!
I leave him alone on his changing table ALL the time! Didn't eve realize this was bad since he hasn't rolled over yet, but I guess there is always time to start.
Leave him alone on the first floor when I run to the basement to do laundry... with the dogs in the house!

Hopefully he isn't scared for life becuase of these things, but he seems pretty happy so I think I'm doing ok Chat Icon

Re: Breaking the “Rules”.. how many have you broken?

We have co slept from the begining and still do now at 11 months.
DS uses a pillow and a blanket.
I hold him for naps.
Gave up on baby foods after 2 months and switched to finger foods (at 8 months old)
