Breast feeding/formula/both?
I really want to breastfeed, but i want to do formula - for a number of reasons. Can you let me know what you are doing and how you plan on doing it--- ex) breastfeed only for a month- then begin to add some bottles?

I plan to BF for at least the first 6 months. Only time will tell if that is going to happen...

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
i plan to EBF for as long as possible. i'm not sure when/if i'll be going back to work in the fall (i want to change careers so i'll be looking for something else after baby's born, but i'd need to find it before september to not go back to my present job or dh needs to find something new) but once i do i'll start pumping and introducing the bottle.

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
I plan on breastfeeding for the at least the first 4-6 months. It really depends on how much I can store and pump at work once I go back in Sept. I plan on nursing for the first 3-4 weeks and then mostly pumping and giving bottles just so I am aware of how much the baby is drinking.

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
I am going to try and breastfeed since it is a free source of formula unless doesn't take to it.

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
I'm going to try to BF but am not against FF. With my DD i was only able to BF for about 2 weeks and then she was exclusivly FF and she's fine and i knew how much she was getting and it wound up working out better for us in the long run. But every baby is different.

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
I had every intention of EBFing, except DD had other ideas!
She was very jaundice after she was born and under the UV lights which made her VERY lethargic and she would not take the breast. She'd latch on then fall asleep from the lethargy, so she had to get formula from the start in the hospital. Once we got home, my ped would not let me BF until her jaundice went away. We needed to know exactly how much she was eating so her body would flush out the bilirubin, so she was on formula only the first 10 days of her life.
Once I got the go ahead to BF, we continued with one bottle of formula at night so my husband could take a feeding (plus it gave us an extra hour to hour and a half of sleep). I was also not getting alot of milk yet when I was pumping.
DD decided she preferred the bottle because she didn't have to work for the food. So now, I am pumping and she is getting 95% breast milk but we still supplement formula at night since we can get a 5 or 6 hour stretch of sleep from her that way.

I am going to BF/Pump but also suppliment with formula. I will be going back to work after 12 weeks. Plus I want others to aide in the feeding so the pressure & duty is not all on myself.

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
I gave DD breastmilk and formula from day 1.
I stopped giving breastmilk at 4 weeks and now she is 100% FF.

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
My plan is to breastfeed exclusively. Not sure how long. I'm thinking 6-8 months but will play it by ear when the time comes. Also will see if we may pump a bottle here and there for DH to feed after the first month or so.
FYI, if interested... I've read the ABC's of Breastfeeding and am now reading So That's What They're For. I'm also half way through Laugh and Learn About Breastfeeding dvd. Pleased with all.

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
I'm going to attempt to exclusively breast feed for at least 6 months. I'm going back to work after 6-8 weeks (not sure yet) but it will only be part time, so I'm thinking pumping won't be so bad. I know that there are lots of factors that might change my plans once baby is born but thats my intention as of now.

Re: Breast feeding/formula/both?
Maybe I'm idealistic...BUT, I hope to EBF for the first 6 weeks or so and then introduce some formula feeds so that we're as flexible as possible. They are big on mixed feeding in continental Europe, but the British are practically nazis when it comes to EBFing, so I'm prepared for not much support, but I'd love to be able to go back and forth according to whatever's convenient at any given time.
