Breast feeding moms question about giving bottles
Dd is 4 weeks old and I have some things going on the next few weeks which means Dh needs to give a bottle of breast milk. How do you know how many ounces to feed the baby? At my 2 week dr appt I was told between 4-5 oz but now I don't know. I don't want to warm up/unfreeze too much milk bc of the short shelf life I would hate to waste it

Re: Breast feeding moms question about giving bottles
When my dd was that age she took about 2.5oz. Anything left over can be kept in the fridge for 10hrs. So next meal you can give her left over and pump if need be.

Re: Breast feeding moms question about giving bottles
I would say to offer 3oz. If she doesnt take it all you can save it and top her off after another feeding that day! Many books say you have to get rid of leftover milk but LLL says it is ok to use within 24 hours and I trust them lol! Plus I hate the thought of dumping breastmilk!
Also how often does she nurse and have you done a pump test in place of a nursing session to see how much you are producing? I know the pump is not an 100% indicator of what you really produce but it is close.
Good luck!

That's great to know I can reheat it and use within 24 hrs!!! She nurses every 3 hours during the day, at night it varies (4-5 hours). I've pumped instead of nursing and I get 6 ounces on average

Re: Breast feeding moms question about giving bottles
we gave DD 2oz when she was 4 weeks old. if you can put 2 ozs in your freezer bag and thaw out 2 (so it =4) and if LO needs the extra 2oz its ready to be served.

Re: Breast feeding moms question about giving bottles
my twins never took more then 4 oz at a time ever of BM, I epumped for them. There is no reason to warm the milk. If your DD has a problem with cold milk then I would try warming it. But by not warming it it will last longer if she does not finish it all.

Re: Breast feeding moms question about giving bottles
Best tip ever - I had the same problem. You can just de-frost milk as needed if you run it under water (it takes about 3 minutes the longest). This way you wont waste any milk and DH can defrost as he goes I think DS had about 4 oz each feeding at 4 weeks, every baby is different though.
