Breast Pump Help!

Starting to look into breast pumps and I am fortunate enough to get one covered through my insurance. I am deciding between the Medela Pump in Style and the Hygeia Q Breast Pump -- both seem to have gotten positive reviews. Can anyone who has breastfed fill me in on which one you have and how you like it?

Also, what do you recommend having for someone who is hoping to breastfed at first exclusively and will eventually pump and store milk when I go back to work? Breast pads? Lanisoh cream? Thanks!

I had the Medela and it was great. My DD was in the NICU for 6 weeks so I pumped constantly and it worked wonders. Just make sure it's the double.

As for extras, you'll want nursing pads, Lansinoh, extra pump parts, storage bags.

Breast Pump Help!

I have the Medela PISA and like it.

I pump 3-4 times a day M-F and 1 time over the weekend.

I'd definitely recommend the cream. I didn't really leak so I rarely used the pads. I know people recommend the reuseable ones.

As a side note, the cream stains - since it's oil based. Ruined one of my fave shirts Chat Icon

Breast Pump Help!

I have the Medela PISA and like it too. I have been pumping 3x a day Monday thru Friday since I went back to work at 13 weeks (DS is almost 6 months now).

For extras I would say you might want to wait and see so you don't waste money. I tried to be prepared and stock up on "essentials" and it turned out I didn't need most of it. I never used a single nursing pad and I used Lanisoh once but never really needed it. I do use the storage bags constantly for my freezer stash and just recently had to get my first set of extra pump parts. I would also say definitely a hands free pumping bra is essential.

Definitely the medela, I have been using it for 6 weeks now and it is great.

You will need spare parts, storage bags (I prefer the lansinoh brand) nipple cream, and nipple pads. Nursing tanks in my opinion were a waste of money.

I also have the Medela PISA. I exclusively pump...I could not live without my hands free pumping bra. I kept leaving mine at work so I bought a second one. I have both the Medela bra and the Simple Wishes bra. Over the two I recommend the Simple Wishes because it allows you to adjust the size and is easier to zip up.

In the beginning when I was trying to BF I would use the nipple cream (Lasinoh was my go to) and breast pads (Lasinoh was also my favorite...wouldn't recommend the Johnson's one as they were too small and could shift easily).

I have a hygeia pump and I really like it. It is light and portable. The hygeia pumps have a closed system so there is no risk of milk getting into the pump while the Medela is an open system. Also the hygeia pump is approved for multiple users so you could sell or donate the pump when you are finished with it.
As for other supplies I recommend Lansinoh or medela lanolin- the Lansinoh is very thick and the medela lanolin is much thinner- I liked both for different reasons. I highly recommend Bamboobies nursing pads. They are reuable and much softer then the disposable pads. I used the lansinoh freezer bags for storing milk.

Re: Breast Pump Help!

I used a hygeia pump with my ds. My insurance doesnt cover one and my friend got it from her insurance but didnt use it. I thought it worked well and had no problems with it.

I'd hold off buying any supplies. You won't need them at first if you are EBF. And you never know what will happen. I wasn't producing enough for DS, so I wound up formula feeding. If I had purchased a ton of supplies they would have all gone to waste.

I agree with this. DS was born premature and I was only able to pump for the first 6 weeks. Well, my milk never really came in. After 10 weeks of struggling and feeling defeated, I finally let it go. But the money I had spent on the pump was essentially wasted.

Re: Breast Pump Help!

I had both the Medela and the Hygeia and I like the Hygeia better. I EP for my twins so I've spent a LOT of time pumping. I just think the Hygeia is more comfortable. Even on the lowest setting of the Medela I feel really sore. Also, I like that the Hygeia is a closed system so you don't have to worry about milk backing up into the pump. Honestly, both of them are quality pumps and will do a good job for you.

I would make sure that you buy a hands-free pumping bra. Even if you only pump occasionally it's well worth it. This is the one that I have.

Simple Wishes Pumping Bra

I agree with the other commenters in that I wouldn't buy too much else prior to giving birth. You just never know how it will work out for you.
