Breastfeeding & Bottles

DD is almost 8 weeks. Essentially she has been EBF. She does get an occasional bottle of breast milk, but when she does it is a HUGE ordeal involving lots of screaming.

I'm going back to work in another 4 weeks and I know I have to get her used to a bottle.

For moms that BF, what bottles do your DC like???

DD likes the Platex Nursers. She's starting to get aggrivated with it though. I need to bottle feed her more to get her ready. I go back to work in 2.5 weeks. Chat Icon

Re: Breastfeeding & Bottles

I BF and supplemented with formula from day one. We have always used avent bottles, no complaints (just don't overtighten or they will leak)

Although I don't go back to work until Sept., I'd like for dd to take a bottle as well. She HATES it. I have so many things coming up where she is going to need to stay with a babysitter and I'm really nervous about her not taking a bottle. We do 1 feeding a day when my DH gets home from work with a bottle. We've been using Dr. Brown's wide neck and I got the faster nipple flow.

Re: Breastfeeding & Bottles

I EBF but I started introducing the bottle at 4 weeks. One bottle a week to start and then gradually increased it. Now I do a bottle a day. I am back to work next week. Dr. Browns is what we use. He seems to like it. He does have his moments. I think he knows I am going back to work.

Re: Breastfeeding & Bottles

We use the Playtex dropins.

Is it you that's tried to give her bottles or someone else? I ask My DD often refuses the bottle from me, or even if I am in the room- so we make sure that I am "out" when she gets bottles from DH.

This is true. I can't give him a bottle. He won't take it from me. My DH or my mom gives it to him.

Re: Breastfeeding & Bottles

We introduced a bottle of EBM to DD at 2 weeks. In the beginning we tried to give her one a day (maybe every other day) to get her used to them. Now we can go more days in between and she doesn't mind. We started with Dr. Browns and have used them the entire 5 months.

I love the Playtex Nurser Drop Ins as well...it reduces their intake of air and the nipple is designed to stimulate their sucking as if they're nursing. DS loved it from the beginning and I just stuck with those bottles.

She screams and fusses when anyone tries to give her a bottle. I've only been in the room once.

We used Playtex Drop-Ins. He also really liked Second Nature (but I didn't like that they had BPA, so we stuck with Playtex).

Have someone else offer the bottle and try to do it everyday. DS always took the bottle when I offered it (he got it about once a week), but when I went back to work he started refusing the bottle or drinking as little as possible to get by -- this meant his night-feeding ramped up. It wasn't the end of the world, but I think next time I'll try to get Chat Icon or Chat Icon used to taking the bottle more regularly. Good luck!

Re: Breastfeeding & Bottles

We have found that she likes the breastflow bottles best. We actually took out the inner nipple though because it was taking an hour to feed her.

We use the Dr. Brown nipples - Level I and the glass evenflo bottles BUT, that said, we went through this as well. We tried different nipples/bottles and it didn't make it better but it does get better with time.

Re: Breastfeeding & Bottles

We bought 1 of a bunch of different bottles, just to try them. Once he liked them, we bought more. He did really like the weird nipples that came with the Medela bottles with the pump. He really fought with the bottles. I found the best way to feed him was to put him in a breastfeeding position, and get the bottle as close to my nipple as possible. It worked for DH too.

We love the Born Free. She does do better when DH feeds her with them though. She wouldn't even consider the First Years Breastflow.
