Breastfeeding moms (TMI Q?)
I am 7 days pp and am so constipated What's safe to take? Also, who should I direct these types of questions in the future, the ped or my OB?
TIA
ETA: My prenatals has a stool softner, but it's not doing me cr@p right now, literately

Re: Breastfeeding moms (TMI Q?)
Not a mom yet but wanted to help. Grabbed the book I'm reading... ABC's of Breastfeeding. Looked up consitpation and it says that due to tears or epesiotomy and hemorroids from pushing, consitpation is quite normal and an over the counter stool softener (maybe has more effect than your prenatals) may help. They don't give a specific brand though so I would think that means an average stool softener is okay for BF.
And I'd call both OB and Ped to see what they say. Do you feel one or the other is more pro BF and will give you best advice?
The book also referenced "Medications and Mothers' Milk" by T. Hale. You may want to pick that up or check your library.
Hope you feel better!

Re: Breastfeeding moms (TMI Q?)
totally normal... you're all banged up inside right now.... Keep drinking tons of water, eating high fiber foods, and if necessary, talk to your OB about a stool softener. My OB actually prescribed one upon my release from the hospital.
things were rough down there until about 6 week post partum
If it were me, I wouldn't take any OTC meds w/o clearing it first with both the OB and the pediatrician (since you're BF'ing)

You can always try the natural way first... prune juice.

Re: Breastfeeding moms (TMI Q?)
I am eating a lot of veggie and fruits to help things along.. but I still can't put too much pressure down there yet, even sneezing/coughing/blowing my nose hurt! I think they gave me colace at the hospital, I will get some from CVS tomorrow.
Thanks for the replies everyone

Re: Breastfeeding moms (TMI Q?)
I don't think colace is absorbed into the bloodstream so you can take a lot- like two or three each day.
Also, you can probably use a suppository or enema (mineral oil or saline) I don't think that would get into your bloodstream either to get into breastmilk.

Re: Breastfeeding moms (TMI Q?)
Get Fiber one cereal. They look like little rabbit food. Eat it as a snack throughout the day and drink a lot of wayer with it. Also try prune juice. Good luck, that 1st poop after your csection is the worst!
