Re: Breastfeeding vs. Pumping....WWYD
Honestly, you may not be about to just pump. I have no problems BF my son but I can only pump an oz or two at best each time I try.

I am pumping as i type and i hate it! it is gross and unnatural imo. Then again, i am not obsessed with bfing either, i am just seeing how long i can do it for.

I have heard that just pumping is difficult because you take double the time to feed. First pumping, then feeding. So at first when the baby is eating SOOO much.. it takes up so much time to pump only.
This is true to an extent, but I found that by pumping, DD ate every 4 hours rather than every 2, like BF babies often do.
I too knew that I wanted to give my DD breastmilk but wasn't sure about the BFing part. I did give it a try in the hospital but when it just hurt too much and I was crying through every feeding, I asked for a pump and that is what I did for 5 months.
In the beginning, I pumped after each time I fed the baby, but it was okay because she always fell asleep from eating, so I had plenty of time to pump. Once your supply is established, you'll only need to pump about 4 times a day (hopefully). I'd pump at 8am when we got up, then around 1-2pm, then around dinnertime and then right before I went to bed.
ETA: I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do this time around because since I'll have a 3 year old, I won't have that quiet time after feeding. But I also am not looking forward to feeding every 2-3 hours either. I think I'm going to have to play it by ear this time.

Re: Breastfeeding vs. Pumping....WWYD
As much as I was uncomfortable with the idea of BFing, my husband asked to at least give it a try, which I did when I was in the hospital.
Thankfully my daughter latched like a champ, so I continued with BFing, exclusively, for 3 weeks, and then I pumped after feedings, to build up a supply for daycare, and so DH could help out with the feedings.
In my own personal experience, BFing is easier - at 3am the last thing you want to do is run downstairs, get a bottle ready, and wait for it to warm up while your newborn is screaming. It's just so much easier to walk into the room, sit down on the recliner and BF, then go right back to bed. Same for going out - I never had to prepare bottles in advance, make sure I brought enough milk, or find a way to warm it up. Just logistically speaking, BFing was definitely easier.
Pumping ain't fun, I can tell you that!

I am no BF expert but from what I have read and heard along the way pumping alone is inadequate to stimulate adequate supply.
Thats not true at all, my son never latched on, I pumped from day one and I pumped HUGE amounts on a 3x a day schedule, 16 oz at about 7 am, about 10 oz at 6 pm and about another 10 oz or so at 11 pm. I am a freak of nature.

I guess I'm a freak of nature too, because I was able to pump about the same amount, but I pumped 4 times a day so I was getting about another 10-12oz. I too pumped exclusively from day 2 and had more than enough milk for DD. I fed her all her bottles and built up enough in the freezer to go almost another 2 months once I weaned when I went back to work.

Re: Breastfeeding vs. Pumping....WWYD
I personally hated pumping but felt that there was a time and place for both. I wouldn't BF DD is public so I pumped so that I would have milk for when we went out for the day.
The advantage of pumping is that other people can feed the baby - your DH, your parents, other caregiver, etc so you can be apart from the baby and not attached at the hip. The disadvantage is that for some people pumping produces less milk than actual breast feeding. Also the pumping supplies are expensive.
Whatever you chose I would try to BF first - b.c if you never produce milk or decide it isn't for you then you have spent a lot of money on the pump and supplies that you will never use.
Honestly it is all really about a personal choice - but both have advantages and disadvantages.
