Britax carseat owners come in please!

DD is busting out of her infant seat. I know we probably should have switched her months ago...

We decided we really like the Britax carseats but we can't decide which one to go with. My DH likes the ones with side head protection (i.e. not the Marathon) but the Boulevard and Decathlon seem HUGE to me. On the other hand, I'm concerned she could grow out of the Diplomat too quickly because she is very tall (+30 inches at 10 mos).

Thoughts/advice would be appreciated! Also, are there any other brands I should be considering?

TIA!!

We went from the Round-a-Bout to the Britax Regent ...Its HUGE, but super comfy ( 5 point harness, up to 80 lbs Chat Icon )

ETA- My DD ( 11 months) is in our Round-a Bout now...She would be lost in the Regent, but my DS grew out of the Round-a-Bout which is why we went with the Regent for him

Thanks!! Do you have a big car? We have one small SUV and one sedan so we're not even sure we can get two of the same seat...

We have a full size Chevy Tahoe...It would probably fit in a small SUV, but if you were planning on having another child, not sure how well 2 car-seats would sit side by side ...

Thanks - that's a good consideration. I can't imagine another DC right now (Chat Icon ) but I'm sure we will still have these cars when that happens!

Re: Britax carseat owners come in please!

We have 2 cars, but DS is primarily in my car - everyday for drop off and pickup from daycare and it's the car we use as a family.

We got a Roundabout and a Marathon. Right now, the roundabout is in my car - the car he is in most often. When he outgrows that one, we will move the Marathon into my car and either get another seat for DH's car or just move the seat back and forth.

My reasoning for this was that I didn't really want to go from the infant seat to one of the big convertibles, so the Roundabout seemed like a better one to start with. He is 2 and still has a little while before he grows out of it. He's very big for his age, so an average kid might be in it until they are 3 or so.

Re: Britax carseat owners come in please!

Actually, I like the Marathon as a choice for the convertible car seat. I do not recommend the Regent as it does not fit in most cars well, as well as I have not seen one installed properly that has not been installed by a tech. But since the Regent is a forward facing seat only let's get back to your needs.

The Marathon is a good chouice, otherwise consider the Boulevard. Just remember that the child should remain rear facing until two years old, so these two seats are a better choice than the Roundabout and Diplomat.

Also, both these seats go to 65 pounds, so you should be able to keep the child in a 5-point harness beyond 4 years old, which would be the ideal.

We debated for a while between the Britax carseats and we went with the Marathon for our 10 month old. We have a Sedan and a 4 door hatchback. We actually just got them in the mail yesterday so I plan to have them installed this week

Re: Britax carseat owners come in please!

we have 2 roundabouts, they are both in our Jetta, not a big car. If we had bigger carseats like the marathon or decathalon, I don't think they would both fit back there.

Right now at 11.5 months they are still small, not even 20 lbs, so I am not concerned about them growing out of the car seats. (not yet anyway)

Re: Britax carseat owners come in please!

we just installed the Marathon last weekend and so far so good... We went with the Marathon because all the mommies I know IRL recommended that seat-- so that's what we registered for.

We had two Boulevards in a PT Cruiser, with plenty of room (no room for another person in the back seat, but the seats themselves had plenty of room).

I have the boulevard CS and highly recommend it. My DS looks so safe in that car seat, the marathon is totally open on the sides, to me didn't look as sturdy. yes it is big but it fits fine in our MDX

We have Britax Marathon Convertible Car Seat - Platinum and love it! My Aunt did a lot of research on Car Seats ~ this is the one she recommended (she purchased for her son)

We have two Marathons and love them. We will get two more when our next DC needs a bigger seat. I have a Honda Civic sedan and DH drives a Chevy Venture minivan. DD is 14 months, 30+", rear facing and is very comfy in her seat. HTH! Chat Icon

We have a Marathon and love it. I'll probably buy another for DD#2.

Re: Britax carseat owners come in please!

We have a Boulevard and took it with us car shopping, plus since it's so easy to install we use this for friends/family vehicles. We have successfully installed it, rear facing, in the following vehicles:

2009 Honda Civic
1998 Honda Civic (tethered RF)
2008 Honda Civic
2009 Honda Fit
2010 Kia Forte (with RF tether)
2009 Nissan Sentra
2007 Nissan Sentra
2005 Hyundai Sonata
2008 Nissan Pathfinder
2006 Saturn Vue (tethered RF)
2009 Hyundai Elantra
2006 Nissan Altima
2008 Pontiac Vibe
2009(2010?) Nissan Cube
2008 Pontiac G6

The only cars it was very tight in (knees in dash tight) were the 2010 Mazda 3 and 2009 Ford Focus.

Also, once your child has good head control you can install the seat more upright for more room. If you do tether it RF don't over tighten it or it will recline it more.

I love the Boulevard, but wouldn't rule out the Marathon either. The boulevard is nice because it has a no-rethread harness height adjustment. Also, don't rule out the Roundabout 50, that one is 35lbs RF/50lbs FF and has a larger shell (similar to Marathon) than the regular Roundabout (shorter shell, 35lbs RF/ 40 FF). The Advocate is monstrous, IMO.

There's no need to spend any extra money on the CS feature either. Safety wise, there is no difference between the regular Marathon/Boulevards and the CS. And there have been complaints that the CS feature is inaccurate/not working at all.

Re: Britax carseat owners come in please!

Tarabelle99,

Nice job, you are correct that the Boulevard offers a nicer adjustment method than the Marathon.

The nicest advantage in choosing either the Marathon or Boulevard is that it goes to 65 pounds. Now the only thing to be careful of is that if installing it for a child over 40 pounds you need to use the seat belt system to install it.

you can't judge a car seat's safety on the way it looks. the marathon may be "open" but it meets all safety standards and is a great choice for a car seat.

Re: Britax carseat owners come in please!

Chris, that is the other thing I like about the Britax seats: When you have to use the belt to install them you don't need a locking clip because it has built in lockoffs.

Another seat to consider is The First Years TrueFit but it's a bit bigger. Has many of the same features Britax boast including the alligator style latch clips, no rethread harness adjustment and built in lockoffs.

Re: Britax carseat owners come in please!

We have the Roundabout 50 and are very happy with it. It is the newer version of the Roundabout that includes the side impact protection and goes up to 50 lbs instead of the 40 the original Roundabout does. It is slightly smaller than the Marathon, which we felt was a better fit for our smaller SUV.

I have 2 Marathon's. Both my girls went into it at 4 months old and I still love them now that my girls are 2 and 3 years old.
