BTDT BF Moms-- Time away from your DC
So, how do you do this?
DH wants me to make plans to do stuff away from the baby... He has some things he wants to do this summer (thanks Phish for touring when I have a new baby! ), and doesn't want to feel guilty when he leaves me to go to concerts and stuff. I can't tell him not to go, because he says it's important to him, etc. I obviously don't have as much flexibility but I do know it's important that we both do stuff for ourselves.
Anyway-- how do you deal with pumping and stuff while away from home? I am building up storage in the freezer, so that's not a problem-- it's more dealing with my boobs for the time that I am gone.

Plenty of times I found myself handexpressing in public restrooms.
I would lean over toliet and watch all that gold get flushed away.
I hated lugging around pump.

Re: BTDT BF Moms-- Time away from your DC
My dd is 4 months and the longest I have been away is maybe 5 or 6 hours...an evening out with dh. I didn't pump and my boobs got hard, leaked some but she would eat when I would get home to releave the engorgement. I have a wedding soon that I am nervous about. I guess I will have to bring a pump with me. I can't imagine doing this in the back of the party bus or at the reception!

I brought my pump everywhere and the small cooler that comes with it. I'd pump wherever I needed to - public restrooms, closets, etc. I never got rid of the breastmilk though, I always kept it!
I also travel for work so I was good at pumping and storing because I sometimes leave for 5 days at a time.

Re: BTDT BF Moms-- Time away from your DC
when i was BFing i did not leave DS for more than 6 hours or so (except to go to work). i could have pumped but i didn't want to.
if it were me i would tell DH to go and have fun - i really enjoyed time with DS when it was just the two of us.

Re: BTDT BF Moms-- Time away from your DC
It's a PITA to leave the baby for an extended period of time when you BF. Like other posters said, I never really left him for too long, or I planned on pumping at some point out. When I was first nursing, I went to a wedding, and I had no idea what happens when you're away that long. I was gone about 6 hours and I was ENORMOUS (like my dress didn't fit by mid-wedding) and in SOOOO much pain. When I got home I pumped about 25 oz in one sitting. Needless to say, I planned better the next time I went out!

I know, and I probably could have kept going but after filling a few containers at 2AM I was done. Words can't express the relief I felt when that pump hit my boob

Re: BTDT BF Moms-- Time away from your DC
I used to just bring my pump---I got a big enough bag to fit my pump & equipment. I have had to pump in the bathroom of a club at a bachelorette party, in my car, at weddings. It really wasn't that bad

Re: BTDT BF Moms-- Time away from your DC
In the beginning, I went out very rarely for more than a few ours. After a couple of months, DH and I went overnight to Atlantic City. I hated pumping so I didn't do it. I hand expressed a little to release the pressure and I fed him as soon as I got home. Wow, did that feel good!! I would, however be a little hesitant to go to a Phish concert, I would be a little concerned about 2nd hand "smoke"

Re: BTDT BF Moms-- Time away from your DC
i guess because i never had a huge milk supply, ive never had this issue,,im almost jealous actually..pumping 25oz? im lucky i get 4 or 5 at a time.. im able to go the whole nite with her sleeping and just be slightly engorged the next morning..never pumping through the nite.. i think it depends on your supply.. my dh still go to alot of punk shows, and hes in a band, so at least im able to go see him play still once in awhile..but even though it is a PITA i WISH i had enough that i had to pump outside lol
