DD is going thu it as we speak and has been since she was 4 months, she is 7.5 months now and her ped said she could have this off and on for a YEAR!! It seems to come in spurts. When she gets it, she gets it bad with gooey stuff coming out and everything. I have found that when i massage under her eye from the inner under eye to the outer every couple hours, the eyes usually gets better within 48 hours until the next time it comes back. Warm compresses works well too. I wish it would just permanently go away, i feel sooo bad when she gets it.

DS had this when we was about 3 months. the ped told me to massage the tear duct which i did. he didnt really have it that bad in the first place tho. but now almost 5 months its gone. he did tell me if it were still there at 1 year i would have to see a pediatric optomologist for a procedure to be done. Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
All three of my dc's had this. For my girls they cleared up on their own. For my son he had to have surgery at a year to unclog them and haven't had any problems since. Definitly try warm compresses and massage the area a few times a day.

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
DS has it... it is still not totally unblocked at 14.5 months. It doesn't bother him at all, but the ophthalmologist told me it could lead to inner ear infections (even though he's never had one ear infection.) He's going to need the procedure done to puncture it, but I can't bring myself to schedule it. (he'll have to go under general)

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
Both of my girls had it. DD#1 I don't remember when it cleared up but we had drops for her...same thing we're doing with DD#2...still using drops even though the eye is pretty much fine now. Sometimes it'll still get clogged. But for the most part at 5 months it's all gone.
My nephew had it BAD in both eyes for a year, then all of a sudden it just cleared up!

Same with DS. I kept cotton balls in jars in the kitchen and bathrooms so I can keep it clean with warm water. And massaged the tear duct by pressing with my finger into the bridge of his nose.

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
Both of our boys had this in the beginning - our ped recommended that if it was still blocked by the time they reached a year old, that we'd visit an opthalmologist.
For older DS, it went away on its own. For younger DS, he's only 4 mos old but it's still clogged so we are massaging it with warm compresses and keeping it clean.
I feel bad because I had the same problem when I was little -- it didn't go away so I had surgery at 10 mos old. I can't imagine how my mom went through that -- I'd freak if one of the boys needs the surgery but I guess it's fairly common and routine by now.

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
I feel your pain...sorry to say, but my dd at 13 mths still has it. We went to 2 opthalmologists and one said it won't clear up without surgery if it hasn't by a year. The other said it may with massage.
I do have to say that in the past few weeks it has gotten MUCH better. I have been delaying surgery because the options are to either do it while she is awake in a papoose or to put her under anesthesia. It seems like a traumatic thing to do while they are awake, but I can't bring myself to put her under.
They said we should wait to 14 mths and see. I hope your ds's clears up soon. The one Dr. did said she sees so many of these and only ends up doing surgery on like 1 in 20

Really? This gives me hope, because she dd has been much better, but the drs we consulted seemed to say if it doesn't clear soon after a year, it probably won't on it's own.

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
My son actually had the procedure today to open it up. His eye since birth would ooze, constantly run and when he would wake up it would be crusty. I would massage his tear duct but it never works. He was also getting an ear infection 1x per month. My ped said not until 9 months do they worry about it. Finally at his 11 month appt. my doctor sent me to Dr. Cossari in Port Jeff. He is a wonderful doctor. My son is now 13 months old and had the procedure at Mather hospital this morning. I cried more than him. His eye looks good and he was great all day. We'll see in the morning how it is.

We saw Dr. Cossari too, he is wonderful. How long did the procedure take? Jonah's eye isn't too bad anymore, but every once in awhile I see it getting a little goopy looking. I thought it had gone away because I didn't see it for awhile, but sometimes I still see it.

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
ETA: he's 8 months old now. Same here. DS has it since birth. When he cries it gets gooyer and in the morning its so crusty that its hard to wash off. We are going to see Dr. Cossari next Monday for our first visit, which they want to dialate his eye and check him out. How is your son doing? Posted by DNR

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
DS had it in both eyes since birth. The right eye cleared completely by the time he was about 14 months. Hes now 19 months & the left eye is still blocked AND it is getting worse.
Coincidentally, we have an appointment with the pediatric optho tomorrow since my ped said that 19 months is going on way too long.
Im afraid of him having the surgery, but I've gotten a lot of positive feedback from other btdt parents.

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
DD had this off and on when she was a newborn. There really isn't much you can do. We did warm compresses and gentle massages of the eye. Seemed to help a little, but mostly they grow out of it

Did they say the ear infections were related?

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
My DD had a blocked tear duct when she was a newborn. It cleared up within a week, maybe two, and she never had it again. It's very common with young babies and my ped said unless it's a persistent problem that extends past their first birthday there is nothing they do for it. Just use a warm washcloth to clean out the eye and hopefully in a few days it will clear up.

Ann had one too (actually two but it was at different times). I don't recall it lasting more than a week or so.

Re: BTDT momns: blocked tear duct
DS had a blocked tear duct from birth. It didn't bother him. It was just annoying that his eye was crusty especially after waking up.
Since it hadn't cleared by 9 months, we were referred to an eye doctor. He told us that there's a 50/50 chance of it clearing up by 1 year. If it doesn't clear up by then, DS would likely need minor surgery to fix it. I thought there was a strong possibility that he'd need surgery. I was completely shocked when it finally cleared up 2 weeks before his 1st birthday.
