BTDT Moms - Hepatitis B Shot ? Edited w/ added ?

Hi girls,

I went to a few pediatrician interviews and some said to get the shot in the hospital, some said to wait for the first office visit and some said it didn't matter. What did yours say?

Thanks for all your responses! I am now leaning towards waiting at least for the first ped visit.

One quick question though....
Any reason behind not wanting the hospital to give it besides what MrsO said about keeping all 3 shots with the same manufacturer?

I have yet to give it to my DS! I declined it at the hospital, and then again at my ped's office! I will prob give it to him when he's pre-teen!

Didn't give it to the hospital. I think he got it when he was a few months old but I probably won't give it to Derek until much later on. He isn't high risk so I dont think it's necessary.

my ped recc that we wait and give it in the office at the first visit (DS would have been 5 days old), not at the hospital. However, I ended up delaying it till DS was around 10 months old and starting daycare

I couldn't answer b.c I had 2 different answers.

DD#1 I gave it with our ped. The ped at the hospital said he only gives it to his clinic patients so we waited until she saw her real ped to get it. I wanted it that way anyway.

DD#2 - That is another story. I REFUSED the shot when DD was 1st born (they told me WHILE I was on the table being sown up from my csection - that they were taking her to give her the vit K shot, eye drops AND the Hep B shot - BOTH my DH and I said NO we don't want her to get the Hep B shot that she gets it at her 1st ped visit - they told us it was state law that she was required to get it - we said no it is NOT state law to give Hep B in the delivery room and that it is OKAY for the vit K and eye drops but NO to the Hep B. - They took her away and wouldn't let DH follow. I found out when I was discharged that they GAVE it to her ANYWAY at birth when I looked at her discharge papers. I was so angry - but they all were like well what is done is done.

other - I didn't give my boys the hep b shot.
FYI - the nurses said in the hospital it is better for your ped to give the shot to keep the same mfg for all 3 shots of the hep b vaccine

I wanted the PED to do it so I had it done when we went for our first appt at 4 days old.

not in the hospital, dd got it from her ped.

not her first visit, I think it was a week or two later.

My ped said not to do it in the hospital. They did it at his one month appointment.

it is funny, with ds #1 i gave it in the hospital because no one told me that their was a preference... this time the nurse doing the paperwork with me actually told me to check with the ped prior to having the shot given and i was glad i waited because they prefer it be done in the office

The trips got their Hep B in the hospital. My Ped left it up to me whether I wanted to wait or give it in the office so I decided to give it in the hospital I also felt that if for some stranger reason if they got a reaction they were in the hospital.

We held off on the first one until DS was over a year and will do the same thing this time around. I spoke to my ped about this and he had no issues with it. Neither DH nor I have Hep B and given it is transmitted blood to blood - the chances of DS getting it as a newborn or even a baby were slim to none - so why put all those chemicals into his tiny little newborn body (the shot is the same regardless of the age) when it really does no good at all. I figured after 1 (and the ped suggested this) there was the remote chance he could be bit by another kid with Hep B and so that's when I started to get them.

We had to sign a form declining the Hep B shot at the hospital. We waited until his first round of shots, I want to say at a 1 month old, if not longer.

I saw no need in giving it to him considering the ways he could contract Hep B.

I did it at the hospital. IMO, DS was at risk because of the population DH works with and I didn't want to take any chances.

DS got his first shot in the hospital; and his second one at his 1month visit.

My ped preferred that DS not be given Hep B while in the hospital and I had to sign a consent where I acknowledged that I was refusing the vaccine.

DS got HepB as part of his Pediarix vaccine at 10 weeks. I wasn't happy about it but it happened.

I hate vaccines, specifically that he isn't himself for a couple days after. Besides not feeling well and being cranky, he stopped babbling after this last vaccine for 2 days. Vaccines scare me.

We declined to have it done at the hospital. We felt he was not at risk, and being born is tramatic enough without having to have a shot on top of that. We were going to give it to him at his first visit, however his first visit was at 8 days old and apparently it needed to be done before 7 days so DS had it at his two months with all his other shots.

we waited for the ped to do it...I just felt more comfortable having her ped do all her shots.

I declined it in the hospital and again yesterday when he got his first round of shots.

they have it mixed in with the DTaP now, but I elected to get just the DTaP.

he's not in day care and I am not sure if he ever will be. definitely TOO low of a risk for us to warrant giving him the shot. same with the rotavirus.

and I would have LOST MY **** if they would have given my son a vaccine against my will in the hospital.

that should be addressed. I am honestly aghast that they did that.

My DD got HepB at 3 so she could start preschool. Will do the same with DS.
