BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
Yesterday DH and I went on our hospital tour and the NP mentioned that after birth the baby will get a vitamin K and first shot of Hep B vaccine. Then she mentioned that some people opt to not have the Hep B shot in the hospital, but rather at the ped's office.
I didn't know about this, I thought the vitamin K and Hep B shots are standard shots after birth. Has anyone opt out for the DC at the hospital? May I ask what's the reasoning? What are the pros and cons?
TIA

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
We opted not to do the Hep B at the hospital but rather at my son's first ped appt. The ped came in to see him at the hospital and asked me if it was done...I said no...waiting for him and he said it was fine. He said either way was fine..my choice but they prefer to do it for record keeping (and probably billing )

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
We didn't care either way so they did it at the hospital. I was told that because of the hospital environment, your DC could be at risk of contacting. I am sure it's pretty minimal risk but they have to offer it anyways because of that.

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
we let DS get the hep b shot in the hospital. we did our research and saw no good reason not to.
honestly it was one less shot i had to see him get at the ped's office, which was a plus. it's so hard to hear and see them cry!

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
We didn't give DD the Hep B shot in the hospital. My nurse at the hospital actually agreed with me that it was not not necessary at that time.
ETA: She received it with her 2 month shots

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
We waited to do the Hep B shot. I just didn't see any reason for him to have it since we didn't have it, no one that would be around him had it, and he certainly wasn't having any sexual contact with anyone to get it.
When we went to his first ped visit, even the doctor said since he didn't have it yet, he recommended waiting till his first set of shots.
So he got it with his 2 months shots.

We had ours done in the hospital. At discharge the nurse said to me you dont have to do it but your ped likes it done before leaving the hospital...
I saw no reason to postpone if he was just oging to get it a few days later anyhow.

this is a good point. we chose to have it done ASAP because my DH works in a field where he is exposed to unvaccinated people all the time, so for us, it was a no-brainer. but for most people, it's not an issue

I agree with you, if I was in that same situation..then we would have.
OP-You have to look at all the variables and decide for your situation.

Same. The ped at the hospital was unable to assume me that the shot they carried was mercury-free so I didn't go for it.

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
For DS we had it done the day we left the hospital - day 4 because I had a c/s. I did not want him to have a shot immediately after he was born.

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
We did it in the hospital the day I left. (day 3) It was just one less thing to worry about later. But I decided to wait a little because I didn't want any more stress on his the first day being born and the second day being circumsised.(sp?) I figure 1 torture per day....lol XOXOXO BOTB

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
DS did not get his first Hep B shot until he was 13 mos. We didn't give it to him in the hospital because there was NO way he could get this disease at that point I didn't see the need to subject his tiny body to all the stuff in the shot and risk any reaction at that young age. HTH

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
We did not do the HepB in the hospital. We actually have not had the HepB administered. Neither DH or I have HepB (we were tested with the orig Preg Test bloodwork), and DS reacts pretty badly to vaccines, so we are on a very conservative schedule.
Definitely do your research & do what you think is best for you.

Re: BTDT Moms.. Hep B shot in the hospital
I answered on you other thread but - My hospital (Columbia Presbyterian) doesn't give it to the regular patients in the hospital, they only give them to their clinic patients (I guess b.c they assume they might not get it otherwise). Their policy is that you get it from you ped later sometimes after discharge.
