BTDT moms - tell me about NUMC (East Meadow)
Can someone tell me the good, the bad, and the ugly about their experiences at NUMC? I really liked what the Gaia Midwives had to say at our consultation, but I know very little about the hospital. FM me if you'd prefer. Thank you!

I personally would not deliver there due to the fact it is a County hospital, but I do have a friend that delivered all three of her children there and loved it! She said that the nurses took good care of her.

I had to go there to be checked out after a car accident I had at about 24 weeks. I was very apprehensive because my family has had some bad experiences with them in the past. I do have to say that they were really good in L&D and I was well taken care of. L&D and their trama units are very highly rated...in fact, it's the hospital the president would go to if he needed emergency care while on the Island. If it were another inpatient unit I would tell you to stay far away, but L&D was pretty good.

The staff is FANTASTIC!! My BFF went there b/c she had a water birth and I can't say enough good things. Who cares if it is a county facility...that means nothing except they get funding from the state, etc. They have a level 3 NICU - and their neonatoligists are top rated.
The downfall is that it is a little outdated esthetically but the staff is great. I was impressed.

Its not a county hospital anymore. Its private owned by a corporation. Its now part of the North Shore / LIJ health system. There NICU is the highest level NICU.

I wouldn't go to the ER there because it's insanity but I've heard nothing but good things about their maternity ward.

Apparently it is a great place to have a baby, especially if you are trying to avoid a c-section. The head of the OB dept seems to be very un-orthodox and allows women to labor on their own much longer than the "standard" these days and is also very v-bac friendly.

Never said they where taken over, part of the health system. The corporation that owns NUMC is NUHEALTH.

My friend's Mom is a midwife and works at NUMC. She said the L&D is great and that they now have birthing tubs and stuff, if you are into that.
If you feel comfortable with these midwives, go for it.

Thank you ladies! I think I'm going to make the switch!
Are their other departments iffy or something? I got a lot of  when I mentioned that I was considering NUMC to my colleagues. They all mumbled something about a bad reputation, but wouldn't tell me for what.

They don't have a truly bad reputation. But they are located in an area where a lot of minorities live (Hempstead and Uniondale are close) and so many people just assume that the people being seen in the ER are drug dealers and gang members. I have no idea of that's true or not but their "bad rep" comes from the clientele, NOT the doctors.
ETA: I'm guessing your colleagues didn't want to seem racist

Don't know if you have been there recently, but I had to go back in October and the ER was amazingly fast. It is all new, clean and seriously I barely finished filling out the paperwork and was being called in. It was Halloween night too, so it was busy.
They have really made some great changes and cleaned it up a lot. The rooms upstairs, definitely need some work. I know for myself, I do not care for the hospital because of the inmates, but you will not see that. I hated being in the hallway, waiting for an x-ray, having two criminals cuffed to a stretcher waiting and screaming, cursing and just being gross. That I don't like, having to mix with inmates. But again, you will be in maternity, much nicer setting!!!

That's just my personal opinion. I have had experience their when DH was rushed to the ER after getting burned at work (he's an executive chef) and he was bought there by ambulence and they had inmates their from the county jail. Not a comfortable environment but that is just my opinion. Also its an affiliate of North Shore not one of their hospitals. As I said in a previous post a friend delivered 3 babies their and loved it! Take a tour and then form your own opinion.
