BTDT Moms of kids with tubes

I know nothing is fool proof, but did your child ever get an ear infection after having tubes? It seems as if my little miss has the beginnings of one 9 months after her tubes went in. I suppose once in 9 months is better than twice or more each month.

I know they develop quickly as she was at the peds two days ago and her ears were clear. Today at the peds, SHAZAM!

Re: BTDT Moms of kids with tubes

DS has tubes and got an ear infection a year after having the tubes put in. I actually realized he had the infection because his ear was draining fluid. Is she draining fluid? What makes you suspect she has an ear infection?

YES! My DD is going on her 3rd set of tubes. Her's only stay in for about 6 months (which is the very low end and rare) and then they start to fall out. She's had a few ear infections.

My DS is on his first set and they are still in place and had his surgery the same time as my DD, but they clog which also causes pain and ear infections.

Granted they were getting 10 - 12 ear infections a season and now they are getting 1 or 2, so it's definitely better but not perfect.

Re: BTDT Moms of kids with tubes

We took her back to the pediatrician after 3 days of a low grade fever. They told us she had the beginnings of an ear infection.

When she had the tubes put in, we were told there were different types of tubes and the ones that Abby has, should theoretically NOT fall out. They were still in at her 18 month visit 10 days ago.

Re: BTDT Moms of kids with tubes

about 1 month after having her tubes, miki had this smelly discharge (sorry TMI) from her ears. we took her to the ENT and he said she DID have an infection but the tunes were forcing it to drain, which is a good thing, if she did not have the tubes, she would have had an infection Chat Icon

he gave us some medicated ear/eye drops which worked well

Re: BTDT Moms of kids with tubes

I did not see any drainage but there very well could have been. Abby did stick her finger in her ear a couple of times. Its pretty funny because she NEVER did that before her tubes.

yes my DC's ears drain ALOT and they have to use the drops, but they've had a few infections where they need antibotics because they stopped draining (the tubes are usually dislodged at that point.)

If my DD needs another set they will use a hammer tube to prevent them from falling out. The only down side is they usually need to be surgerically removedChat Icon so another surgery!!

Abby was put on an antibiotic. I would assume if they looked in her ears knowing she had tubes, they would have been able to see if they were there or not just like at her visit. Im stumped.

you would see it. It's gross. Like a thick cloudy runny nose but in your ear. You usually have to wipe it out several times for a day or so with a tissue.

Nope. Nothing. Is it possible it was caught just before it got bad considering it wasnt there 2 days before?

miki has the same ones, the ent said he would remove then when she is 4 -5(she had them put in at 2 y, 3 months)

by then he said her eustacian (sp) tubes would be slanted and there would be no need for the tubes

Did you see the ENT or the ped? The ENT has better tools. The ped can see if it's dislodged, but if it's there it may be clogged which will lead to an infection because they can't drain. Whenever my ped sees an "infection" he makes us go back to the ENT to get it suctioned out.

we decided to go with these because, as what happened to your dd, they can fall out too soon so we went with the "sure thing" so she will have no more than 2 surgeries (one to put them in, one to take them out)

Thats what we weer told too. The pedicatrician can ID which ENT did her tubes by the color of the tubes. They were done so well that he had to do a tympanogram to make sure they were still in there 2 weeks ago.

honestly with 2 years experience (but I'm no doctor) I would think they are clogged if they are still there, not draining and getting an infection. If they were working properly they WOULD drain, they are supposed to. The drainage prevents the infection. In other words, if you didn't have a tube that fluid would cause an infection. If she has an infection it is possible it's clogged and I'm not sure the ped can see it with his tools. I was just at my ped yesterday and he said that the ENT has a microscopic thing and he can tell better.

Saw the ped. Actually, my MIL brought her in. While she was there, she called me and i asked if she needed to go to the ENT. They said "no" and gave us an antibiotic. I can call the office but the doc doesnt have Saturday hours. Im going to see how it plays out over the next day and then call.

Re: BTDT Moms of kids with tubes

I can't do anything about it tonight. Tomorrow is Saturday and Abby's ENT is Orthodox. But if her fever doesnt break and there is no change, I will call the ENT emergency line.

I am annoyed right now. Alys ENT didnt even give any options or mention that there are different types.

Maybe because she is almost 4, he just assumed when they fall out she wont need them anymore?
