WOW! 1728 Yes to 1729 No.
That's one person who couldn't find a close enough parking spot and didn't want to run out in the rain. Crazy!

Re: budget votes results are trickling in
So what does it mean if a district fails? Programs are cut? There are layoffs?

it goes up for a vote one more time, sometimes with revisions, sometimes without. If it fails again, some districts then fall back on an austerity budget. But yes, it means cuts across to staff, programs, etc.

Ours passed. What angers me is that kids not from my SD are in our schools and I am paying for things for them. That's not right!

That is not always true. Districts have to pay other districts for children in the school but not residents.

Re: budget votes results are trickling in
its really striking when you look at the ones that failed, both in terms of the vote count as well as the percentage increase that they were going to have.
And very sad when you look at the vote totals for Wyandanch:
Wyandanch $57,071,440 3.40% Fail 147(for) 236 (against)
That's a mid-sized district with only a total of 383 voting.
Looks like the far east end districts had the biggest increases and mostly passed.

I'm sure that's true, but in my SD I am paying for kids that do not belong in my schools.

What about the children attending school of people who are not legal citizens? If they aren't legal, they don't pay taxes, so they aren't paying for their children to attend school?
Is that accurate??

I don't understand this. I currently don't teach at a public school in NY, but when I taught public in MD, students had to have a birth certificate to enroll. If a student is born here, and they get a birth certificate, then they are a legal citizen. Also, many people don't pay property taxes, but even illegals pay sales and other taxes, they don't pay no taxes.

Yeah that's why I was asking. Cuz I have NO clue.
I just know that in districts like my sister's there are a TON of kids (some born here, some not) who are children of parents that are not legal so I don't know how it works.
Now, she does have some students not born here -- how do they get around the providing birth certs from this country??

Re: budget votes results are trickling in
I know in Smithtown, you need to provide a birth certificate, bastismal certificate or passport, plus 2 proofs of residency.

Yeah I went there too.
Well, my sister (different district) has four students (just her) who were not born here. I wonder how that works?
I'll have to ask her.
I mean, it's neither here nor there are this point, it was just something that got me thinking and made me wonder b/c we were talking about money and tax increases.
Don't get me wrong - the major issue is the freaking Director's salaries. My sister's director, for example, makes SO MUCH MONEY and doesn't do anything. She has all the teachers under her do her job. Oy!

I think they are still paying taxes because if they rent the owner of that house/apartment is paying property taxes. No?? I mean if a legal citizen rent they are still entitle to go to the school because through the property taxes they are paying school taxes..

People in other countries have birth certificates, too. Schools aren't asking for BCs to determine citizenship as far as I know. Plenty of children here legally were born in other countries and will never have a US BC. I've never known a school that required proof of US citizenship or lawful residency to enroll a child.
I also agree that it's not true that illegal immigrants don't pay taxes -- renters (legal or otherwise) don't technically pay school taxes, but their landlords do. And illegal immigrants also pay sales tax. In addition, many actually DO pay income tax -- more than you'd actually expect.

Thanks for the info!!
I'm the first one to say, and I made that clear, that I had no clue lol. I was asking b/c it is something I hear people talk about a lot - they say it here or there but I never knew if there was truth to it or not.

Re: budget votes results are trickling in
schools only use a BC (or other doc) for age to enroll in an appropriate grade. Citizenship is never asked.
