Build a Bear Pay your Age Day an Epic Fail

Did you guys hear about this?
Not sure who's brilliant idea this was but apparently today only at Build a Bears you could get a stuffed animal for whatever your child's age was.

But they didn't count on the lines that wrapped around entire shopping malls.
Chat Icon

And they ran out of stuff because they couldn't keep up with the demand. Chat Icon

And they had to shut down completely before noon due to safety and crowd concerns.

Hmmm...didn't see that coming.

How did anyone think this would go over well?

Logistical nightmare.

And now you have a ton of upset kids.
Good one.

But if you are a member of the bear club you pay your age the month of your birthday so parents are insane to even bother.

I thought this was ill conceived from the get go. I knew people who flock. I just dont get why. To get a bear for like half the price that your kid will play with for like half a day? No thanks. I'd rather pay full price to have the EXPERIENCE. To me that is what you are paying for--a teddy bear isnt that exciting.

I dont think it is necessarily their fault, ill planned, maybe. But Im tired of entitled parents and kids whining about crap like this. Its a stuffed animal. No company can do anything nice without some parents claiming their child has been ruined forever now bc they didnt get an $10 bear. Honestly, as a parent, you dont take your kids to this kind of sh!t unless you plan on being online at 6am. Of course they ran out of stuff, but it was advertised as "while supplies last", as are most promotions. If your kid is upset, you should have set up the expectation that we will go and see how it is but that if the line is really long (which people shouldve KNOWN it would be) then we arent waiting. There is no stuffed animal worth that kind of aggravation and most kids have enough crap, if missing out on a stuff animal ruins their day and causes them to need years of therapy, then your kid is spoiled.

Exactly. The prices at build a bear are high because you are paying for the whole experience of making the bear. I wouldn't spend $50 on a bear off a shelf.
And I wouldn't ever ever ever stand on a line that long no matter WHAT they were giving away.
Unless it was a winning power ball ticket or something.
Other than that- NOPE!

exactly - my sister brought my son for his birthday and he had an amazing time...but there was hardly anyone in there so he got to go through the whole process at his own pace and really loved it. I think they are overpriced for sure....but like you said, its for the experience, not the actually stuffed animal.

They shut down due to crowd safety. Like people are going to riot over only paying 2 or 3 dollars for a crap bear that costs .45 cents to make!!! Ridiculous is not the word.

Re: Build a Bear Pay your Age Day an Epic Fail

I just had another thought though - I do feel bad for the people that cannot afford to take their kid there on a regular day. I mean you pay at LEAST 50 bucks and thats without a lot of extras. I feel bad for those that wanted to to something nice for their kid and were let down. Honestly there were probably a ton of people that CAN afford it and just wanted to do it just because and the people that should have been able to do it and couldnt. Now I am sad thinking about it.

I don't understand how anyone would wait in a line that long to save what, $20-$30 bucks???? For something that no kid actually NEEDS. Complete insanity if you ask me

Same. I kept seeing friends of mine with kids posting about it on FB, but I didn't even consider taking my kids because I had no desire to stand on line for hours.

so i went to the mall around 9:45 thinking i would go a little earlier than the store opening at 10. I didn't even get out of the car! I rolled my window down and asked the people towards the front how long they'd been waiting, and they said since 6am! So stupid for a stuffed bear

Agreed it’s the experience. We took our twins for their first birthday and we both took the day off. It was a Friday in the middle of January not a sole in the store they were able to do what they wanted

My sister in law went. Got there at 9:30 and left at 3. Insane. I’m sure the bear will sit on the floor of the kids playroom for months and months. Not worth it.

But all those parents need to do is sign up for free to the bear club and during a kids birthday Month they get to pay their age. So no one is actually getting left out. It’s just the stupid parents who didn’t read.

You can only get a special birthday bear. This event was for anything they had in stock, with the exception of Pokemon I think.
