I am planning on getting the wood ones for DD when she gets a little bit bigger.

They are much smaller than the cardboard ones (I can't tell how big the foam ones are). I would be concerned that the cardboard ones would get crushed - especially if being used by smaller children (my DD would definitely try to climb on them ).

We had the wood ones growing up and they lasted through 4 of us. I would be concerned that pieces of the foam ones could break off.
