I have the "Circle Of Friends" poem. I then have each student make their face on a paper plate using yarn for hair etc.. The poem goes out on the hall bulletin board and I staple the plates/faces in a circle around the poem.

That stinks about your boards in NYC. Are all schools like that?
We will do writing once we get into the second week and Ill switch it out....
Can't you just put some fun stuff up to start?
I teach in NYC and am allowed to be creative. I think it all depends ont he principal...

For my front door, I bought light bulb cut-outs and wrote each child's name on one. My dooor will say "Home of Bright Ideas" with all the bulbs underneath.
For my first bulletin board, I have them make booklets titled "All About Summer Me", a take-off of those All About Me boards we usually see. Kids write about their summer and how things are different from the school year and from the summer.
My other bulletin board is for math, but I haven't decided on that yet. It might be "Numbers, Numbers Everywhere!" with the kids drawing pictures of where they use math or see numbers in their everyday lives.

I LOVE the lightbulb idea! The name of my program is Magnet and I'm having a hard time coming up with something.... I am wondering for me if it would be too 'stereotypical' to use light bulbs for a gifted program? Is that bad of me to do? should I just stick to magnets with their names on it? I like the bulb ideas..
