Buy or Lease
After the other poll I'm curious, do people generally buy or lease. I prefer to buy, I know my parents prefer to lease.
So what's the norm ..or most common?

Re: Buy or Lease
I'm a "buy" person. My mom would have aheart attack if I leased a car. She's old school and can't imagine paying for years and not owning anything. I have to agree, although I was considering finding a good deal ona 2 year lease just until some good hybrids come out and then I will buy.
My car is the moneypit!

Re: Buy or Lease
Always buy. I'm not sure if the dealer would be happy if he got my gold-plated, wood-trimmed, modified PT Cruiser back....
I like to mess with my cars. I also keep them for quite a while. My cars are 6 and 8 years old, and still in perfect condition. Can't remember when I last made a car payment.

That would be interesting to see their faces if you did!! I'm also a buy person, we keep our cars for way too long, DH beats on them responding to the firehouse and putting all his lights in it. My next car is going to be a brand new one thought, I've only owned used.

we have leased my last two cars. I think we will continue to do so b/c I never put mileage on them and I like having a new car every few years.

That's how I am - I love not having a car payment. I prefer to drive my cars until the cost of repairing them becomes more than the value of the car. My Subaru is 10 years old and still has no problems - I love my subby

Re: Buy or Lease
I cant imagine buying...dh bought and his payments are nearly 500 a month. I can lease for 300 and have a new car in 3 yrs. Meanwhile he is stuck with his problems after 3 yrs. (our case scenario)

Re: Buy or Lease
I leased my first truck bc I didn't have the extra $$ to own it. It was nice bc I got a new car in 2.5 years but at the same time, it was a never ending payment.
My truck now we financed with GMAC for 0% for 60 months. I have 11 payments done & we plan on keeping the truck until we need something bigger. I have no miles on it & the car drives beautifully.
DH use to lease all the time but got tired of paying out so much $$ & having nothing to show for it after the payments were done. Plus he does a lot of mileage & would get caught with overage charges constantly!!!

Re: Buy or Lease
We've always bought until now. This past January we leased our first car. Love it. But will probably go back to buying once the lease is up.
We wanted to get a larger car but not as large as we will eventually need. So we figured we would lease for 3 years and when the lease is up we'd be ready for our final upgrade which we plan to buy.

Re: Buy or Lease
love leasing. Opens up way more options. I like a new car every few years, new models, more features, safety..etc..
I like to own things that appreciate and rent things that depreciate.

Re: Buy or Lease
i think it depends on how much you will be driving it, if you know you will stay under the miles each year, and want a new car in 3 years and no maintence a lease is perfect
If you have a big commute, and drive alot on weekends or take alot of roadtrips to visit people, then buying may be a better option

Re: Buy or Lease
I'm more of a lease (or demo person because of DH) person. I like the option to get a new car every 3 years and upgrade or downgrade when we need to.

We have leased before but now we buy.
We put way too much mileage on our cars to lease.

Re: Buy or Lease
I bought my first car and just leased a truck. Dh has always leased. I like leasing because we're both the type of people who always want new cars, so it makes sense for us. I think it's a very personal decision though. For others, I understand why buying is best for them. I just knew though that if I bought this new truck, in a few years I would have wanted something new and would have spent all that money, only to lose it.

could not agree more. I dont understand why you would want to buy something that not only depreciates the second you leave the lot but then you have to put tons of money in it to keep it runing (repairs)regular wear and tear , tires etc. BOGGLES MY MIND that people who dont need to buy do bc that money could be invested and earning interest and paying you !

Re: Buy or Lease
I always buy (finance) slightly-used cars. I like knowing that after the loan is paid off I'm done and I have something to show for it.

leasing is not a bad program for people who want more car than they can afford and/or want a new car every 3 yrs. also, people who drive a lot would never be able to lease.
to me, it is wasteful to lease. I haven't had a car payment in almost 6 years. and at (approx) $300 a month x 6 yrs = $21,600. I MAYBE put 10% of that amount into my car in the past 6 yrs.
again, to each his own.
