I like to own things that appreciate and rent things that depreciate.
This is why we bought a certified used car. We own it, and it is actually valued more than we paid for it.
Now I know a car's value will never increase, but I like paying for things on my own terms, not some other company's terms.
We also don't need to look at mileage and think about what fees we might have to pay once the lease is up.

Re: Buy or Lease
When I decided to get a new car, leasing was the best option for me. I didn't have to put any money down and the payments were lower. My lease is up in August and I am probably going to lease again. I still don't have the money to put down unless we get lucky with 0% financing from Honda.

Re: Buy or Lease
Both DH and I buy.... always buy. I will own the car after 3 years of payments, and then it is 'free' for the next several years. If you buy with the long-term in mind (brands / models that have a very good repair history), it is very cost effecive to buy.
DH is done with his payments for his '06 scion, and I have another year for my '07 prius. after that, we won't have to worry about car payments, and can focus on saving for a house....

Re: Buy or Lease
I have mixed reviews. We have an 01 car no payment but of course needs repairs $$. We lease the other. The lease is up soon and now that its been 3 years I have to either buy this car or return it or lease or buy another car so thats $ I threw away for 36 months. I may just end up buying up outright because I'm getting tired of making payments. I'm thinking I don't want to make payments for another 3 years and so on and so on.

Re: Buy or Lease
one of the reasons I started leasing is that I like having a late model car. The biggest reason was that a new car as a very small chance of breaking down anywhere. I broke down once in my 8 year old car and it was so aggravating that I never want to have it happen again. I was in the middle of nowhere and broken down. I decided that I needed a new car. Bought one I loved and paid a car payment for about 4 years and put 100K on it. I still owed money on it and wanted a new car..I sold it for the remaining loan and got another car..same cycle..
started leasing and never looked back.

Re: Buy or Lease
Employee lease. I get a new car every year or 15,000 miles. I used to own my cars prior to DH working for an auto manufacturer. I get a great deal which includes insurance. I will probably not by a car unless we have another child and need a minivan since his car company doesn't make them.

Re: Buy or Lease
Buy...we pay our cars outright and keep them until they run into the ground. Can't imagine paying for a car every month forever...we have enough expenses

We lease one and own one (paid off).
ditto and I love it. We'll probably always do this.

Re: Buy or Lease
my DH is bought- you can't lease a saleen mustang- so we had to buy it
but I know in a year or so he will want something newer, nicer, faster, louder
my current SUV is leased- I would never buy a german car- they get quite costly to fix as they get older and even now an oil change and tune up is more then I used to make in a week at my first job
but - I don't want to lease next time- it's a waste to me
I am buying a certified pre-owned lexus SUV that I will drive till it dies or 10 years-
