Buying flights - family of 5
If anyone has experience with this - let's say there are 2 seats left at the lowest available fare, but I need 5 seats. If I search for 5, do I pay a lower fare for 2 seats. Or, do I pay an average of the 2 lower and 3 higher fares? Or are all 5 at the higher fare level? Essentially, could it be better for me to split the reservation, or will I pay the same either way?

I'm not sure about 5, but when I bought tickets for my family of 3 this past summer I had that problem. There were two left on a Jet Blue flight for one price. So I split the reservation. I bought the two lower price seats for my son and I. And I bought my husband's seat on a separate reservation that cost I think 20 dollars more. I don't remember what the cost would have been if I made the reservations together. I think it would be have been more or I wouldn't done that.

Split the reservation, especially if you can select your seats in advance. DH's cousin does this for his family of 4, he actually makes 3 separate reservations, 1 child is a lap child.

When booking one reservation for 5 people if there are not enough of the lower fare seats, then you're bumped up to the next fare. So I would just do separate reservations
