Buying a family car
We're looking to buy a new car before our baby comes in May. Right now the top contender is the Volkswagon Passat, but I'm concerned about reliability. Anyone have any opinions?
Any other suggestions? We are looking to spend no more then $25,000. I am most interested in safety, good gas mileage, interior room and trunk space. Also considering the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry...

The Honda Accord and the Hyundai Sonata are also nice cars in that size category/price range.

I have the Chrysler 200. I love it. It is a great ride and was a amazing price. It is loaded. The only thing I decided against was the GPS.
We have no problem fitting 4 adults with my DS in his car seat.

Re: Buying a family car
We have the camry. I don't find the gas mileage that impressive (I work PT and commute 50 miles roundtrip-i often sit in traffic). I usually get about 25 miles per gallon.
We had the accord and that got totalled during the storm a couple of years ago. That had very similar gas mileage.
Both are pretty similar, IMO, comfort and space wise. We are having #2 soon and still plan on using this as the family car.

We are on our 3rd Fusion and LOVE IT!!!!! We just keep going back for another when our leases are up! I have had 0 problems with any of them, plenty of room, HUGE trunk, lots of car for the money.

Believe it or not, a Prius. The basic Prius is very roomy in the backseat (we've had 3 adult males back there with no problems), lots of trunk space. They also have the Prius V which is bigger but the only thing is you can't get a clean pass for it, which is why I'm sticking with the basic 3rd Gen.
ETA: And since the Prius is a hybrid, gas mileage is phenomenal.

Re: Buying a family car
We actually looked at the Passat also and were impressed by the amount of room. It was bigger than some small SUVs we looked at. Had we not got our jeep, we would have gotten the Passat. It is also top rated for safety. The new Accord is actually very nice also as are the Hyndai's.

Re: Buying a family car
A number of family members have had VWs and all were very happy with them.
As for the others, my parents have an Altima and are very pleased with it. The backseat is huge, lots of leg room as is the trunk. I can't comment on the Camry or Fusion.

Re: Buying a family car
I have a VW Routan, but I love VW! We had a great experience at Riverhead Bay as well...much better than at Donaldsons.
