Buying gifts for kids
Does anyone else feel clueless?
I don't have many kids in my life, just a few babies, but I want to buy some gifts for charity.
I was looking online and I have no idea how kids sizes run anymore, even though I used to work in a children's clothing store.
6, 6x, 6-7? huh? I was so confused.
And then I picked up a few things that I thought were cute & was having flashbacks to going shopping with my mom for my Christmas dress & my picture day outfit & HATING everything she gushed over!
I fear I am going to do the same thing to some little kid. I need a 7 year old to borrow!

Re: Buying gifts for kids
I am sooo clueless too.
My niece is 8 going on 9. Last year I bought her some Camp Rock Barbie...I was seriously standing in Toys R Us wondering if she was allowed to play with the small parts

Re: Buying gifts for kids
I ask my sister what the kids would like, waht toy phase they are in now. Makes it easier on me now that they are older.
My niece just turned 9, and for her b-day I took her shopping for clothes. She loved it - we went to the GAP and got such cute outfits. She likes Justice, but I'm not so crazy about the clothes - they look cheap and somewhat tarty. Her brother (12) got an Amex gift card, so that he can buy whatever he wants.
Both kids are not the "I want" "I need" type. We can go to the mall and they don't want everything in sight. I don't mind spending money on them, they are the loves of my life, and actually encourage them to pick something out.

Re: Buying gifts for kids
I just ask their parents want they want/need. I don't know anything about kids' clothing or toys, so I would pick something totally inappropriate (like clothing two sizes too small or toys way too advanced for their age) if left to my own devices.

Re: Buying gifts for kids
Since I have a nephew & 2 nieces I am pretty much in the know about buying gifts for kids. A good hint to purchasing items for kids is to know the kid. Some kids are very open to items, where other kids have a very particular idea of what they like & do not like. My nephew is very picking when it comes to clothes & toys. I find it easier to get him a gift card so he can buy what he wants. My nieces are typical girls, they love girly clothes & dolls, etc.

I'm buying for a kid I don't know! It's for the slavation Army Angel giving Tree program. I was "pre-shopping" to see what kid of stuff I could find/afford before I picked a kid (see, really clueless), but I ended up with a 9 year old boy.
He needs pants, shirts, & a jacket. He wants a drawign kit.
The clothes I think I can handle because ther isn't as much variation with little boys clothes & they listed sizes.
I thought the drawing kit would be easy, but I really have no clue!
I think the ones I was looking at are for teens/adults who want to really learn how to draw--one even came with a little human figure model.

Re: Buying gifts for kids
If you go to Amazon, you can narrow down your search by age and sex. From there, you can sort by something like "most popular". Sometimes I do that to get ideas.
If he wants a drawing kit, it sounds like he's creative and there are a lot of options out there. I loved when my nieces and nephews were in that stage, because some of those pencil/paper kits look totally awesome to a kid.
Btw, kudos for adopting an angel.

Re: Buying gifts for kids
DH and I are COMPLETELY clueless! We only have 4 kids to buy for..so we usually hit up their parents to find out what is on their childs wish list.
Then we choose what to buy that we think the child will actually play with. Becuase DH and I recently realized how insanely expensive silly kiddie toys are now and we dont wanna spend alot on something they are gonna touch one day.
The price of childrens toys = another notch on our list as to why we dont want kids. Id MUCH rather spend $40 on something for myself

I know! I have such an appreciation for all the gifts I received as a child & all the parents who struggle to get their kids what they need/want. I see now, why my mother had a Christmas club account!
The little boy I am buying for has such a reasonable list, and even with my bargain hunting skills, it adds up!

DH and I do want kids, but I know what you mean - I'm dreading having to buy for our own someday, since we already spend a small fortune on our nieces and nephews every year!
To answer the OP, I used to teach, so back then I knew exactly what all the cool new toys were and what the kids were into. But since I left the education field, I'm growing more clueless every year. I try and ask my friends with kids for advice, or check out the threads on the parenting board about what people are getting their little ones for the holidays.
