Cailen refuses to drink from a sippy - what should I do? UPDATE
I wouldn't even push it but when he moves up to the next room, which could be soon, they don't allow bottles.
He has no interest in the sippy - even if I withhold bottles all day!!! He throws it or plays with it....
I can't mess with his night time bottle, so I can't just stop cold turkey...

Your only option is really doing it cold turkey, unfortunately. that's the only way he's going to realize that it's time to give them up.

Re: Cailen refuses to drink from a sippy - what should I do?
We tried to replace one bottle and it never worked. I went cold turkey, hid the bottles and within 2 days they were completely off of them. One of my boys had a complete and utter meltdown where he was screaming uncontrollably so I gave him a bottle, he downed 2 8oz bottles and never used them again.
We were trying for weeks on end with the one bottle, the best thing we ever did was go cold turkey.

Re: Cailen refuses to drink from a sippy - what should I do?
Have you tried a straw cup? My nephew doesn't want anything to do with a sippy, but will do a straw. (To teach him how to use the straw, my SIL shared her mango smoothie with him.)
Are the daycare teachers working with him on the sippy? (Just wondering since he's with them all day and they're the ones with the requirement.)

I had trouble getting Lily to take the sippy too. I just kept offering it and I tried different kinds. The ones that finally worked were the disposable Take & Toss ones. I got them at Target. Once she started drinking out of them she didn't want the bottle anymore. It's was like all of a sudden she liked the sippy cup.

I had a similar problem early on. My doctor told me to put the good stuff (juice, milk...etc) in the sippy and the blah stuff (water) in the bottle. Keep that up for a few days. It worked like a charm for me.

Thanks ladies!
I am thinking of going cold turkey, but am so afraid to mess with his sleep...
The daycare try, but he screams and refuses it.
I use the Gerber no spill ones, and the Nuby ones, but maybe they are too hard to s uck out of? He does like the take and toss ones, but I can't leave him alone with it - he loves to "drip" and they would make a big mess!!!

It takes TIME...sometimes a long time.
Playing with and throwing it is actually good. It means he acknowledges it.
You need to give it to him as often as possible, at every meal and yes deal with the wet mess, but eventually he will get used to it.

Get the straw ones. I have some Playtex ones and Emma will drink out of those. Not so much the regular sippy cups though.

Re: Cailen refuses to drink from a sippy - what should I do?
I've been going through the same thing, DD holds the cup and plays with it, but she doesn't drink from the sippy, just uses it as a teether.
I find that I'm having more success with the straw cup. I had to teach her how to use the straw by getting the liquid up the straw but stopping it with my finger from the other end, and then dropping it into her mouth... she's learning how to suck it up that way, and has been a little more successful with the straw cup. You might want to try that. I'm hesitant to go cold turkey because I don't want to stress out DD and I want her to drink!

Let me know how it goes! If you're still having trouble, I'll ask my SIL to bring Cailen a mango smoothie to my house on Sunday (And I really think she would do it for you too!!!!)

Re: Cailen refuses to drink from a sippy - what should I do? UPDATE
Thanks ladies - he loved the one with the straw - I had to su ck it up and then push it into his mouth for him to get it - but I used the Naked juice which he loves.... but I am having so much trouble cleaning the gunk out in the straw and am worried that milk will get rancid in there - we don't have a dish washer so I try to soak it and then put hot water in a pot and let that part soak - any other suggestions?

Get a nipple brush. Dr Brown's sells about 3 or 4 of them in a pack and it will get the stuff out of the straw

Agreed. A q-tip works too.

I had the same problem for awhile and we used these- they were great. They come with different spouts. One spout looks like a soft sippy cup spout. I got it at bru.

Re: Cailen refuses to drink from a sippy - what should I do? UPDATE
OH DS was the same way- HATED the sippy cup. I started with the nuby and changed the nipples (from baby to "sippy" type nipple) then I went cold turkey into the straw cups and when they got annoying enough to clean I moved onto the playtex sippy cups (sort of looks like an adult coffee on the go thermos) from BJ's he loves it now and we have stopped using bottles and straw cups-now I am working on small dixie cups-wow what a mess, but we are trying-LOL! Good Luck!
**Best way to clean the straw parts is with the Dr Browns bottle brush-there is a tiny brush you can buy for the Dr brown bottles since they have that straw like part and it fits right in the sippy cup straw because I had the same problem-rancid milk and mold-YUCK!

This is what DS uses. I tried EVERY sippy cup out there but this is the only one he would drink from.
