California pacific coast highway trip
Has anyone done this? Anything they recommend? We are starting out in San Francisco and working our way down to LA area. Any advice of what to do and see, restaurants in San Fran area? Did you stay in the city itself or outside? Thanks

Aa part of the drive south, I would stop in Monterey, do the 17-mile drive, Carmel by the Sea, Hearst Castle.
In San Fran itself I would get tix to see Alcatraz (you usully have to get them a few weeks in advance, depending on the time of year). Last time I was there I only had a short time in the city itself so did an all day tour that hit the highlights - major tourist sites. If you have time, I would spend an afternoon in Saulsalito just (across the Golden Gate)

Stay in San Fran if possible - Actually, if you can, do a night in Sonoma or Napa ....then go to San Fran Def. Montery, Carmel, Hearst Castle was very interesting - Santa Monica GORGEOUS - wish we would have stayed longer there
I'd spend the least amount of time in LA .......like, drive straight to the airport and go home. LA to us, was like Queens - nothing special at all - Rodeo Drive / Beverly Hills is the equivalent the Americana / N Shore area
ETA - Alcatraz supposedly has a night time tour that's very cool, but you need to buy tix forever in advance. I've only been during the day =-

Re: California pacific coast highway trip
I definitely recommend the Alcatraz at night tour. Sausalito is great for brunch. We had some great meals in San Fran:
Wayfare Tavern (Tyler Florence's restaurant)
Orient Pearl in Chinatown
Sears Fine Food for breakfast
