Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you planting this year?
wow! This all sounds amazing! I would love to have gardens like these, but I don't even know where to start... I bought some basil seeds the other day and was thinking of putting those in some pots...
Can you ladies post pictures of your gardens as you do them? I would love to see them for ideas and ispiration as to where to place everything... i look out into my back yard and get so overwhelmed...

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you planting this year?
a great beginner book that I think everyone should read is "the square Foot Gardener"
He really makes it simple & compact. You can successfully grow many veggies & herbs in containers(pots) as well but you need the right soil & proper drainage. The other good things about pots is you can move them in our out of the sun if you're not sure that you have an ideal spot.
This is my garden around Memorial day last year
This was a little later in the summer
this year we added another bigger raised box & I'm doing some lettuces in containters & corn & pumpkins in rows.

I just... started. I found things I thought were pretty, bought them, killed them, figured out that I should start reading the labels...
That's part of the fun. The trial and error. And then you can come back here and tell us how it went!
Here are my asiatic and daylilies:
A couple of dahlias:
Osteospermum (Daisy):
Two of my monster coleus creations, the top one has ornamental grass in it too:
I love love love coleus and all it's colors but it's an annual that will die in the cold.

Coleus is a great self propagator (sp?) take some clipings this year and put them in water, once they have roots stick them in a pot of soil and you can keep it inside all winter then replant in the spring

I am doing impatients, petunias, geraniums, gerber daisies, begonias, and also a weeping cherry, and flowering crabapple. And whatever else catches my eye at the nursery!

I'm definitely going to do that again once we're homeowners. The big black/pink/green coleus in the last picture is the same one on the bottom center of this pic:
Once I put it outside, it exploded and I couldn't keep up with the flowers and pinching them off anymore!
The one all the way on the right I pruned like mad and shaped into a bush. At some point, I want to make a coleus tree.
Have you ever bought coleus from Glasshouse Works? I always wanted to but then I found out that Cipriano Nursery in East Meadow sells coleus from them so I go there instead.
