Calling All "Mommies" To Give Me Advice--Feeding Related
Hi Ladies,
My almost 9 MOS old is still on Gerber, stage 2 foods. I tried stage 3 this week. Of course like stage 2 she loved the sweet potatoes as its the same as stage 2 just more quantity. Last night I attempted to try the stage 3 lasagna and meat sauce and she gagged and vomited. I think she hated the taste and didn't know what to do with the little chunks in it. She never seemed to like any of that, even the chicken and noodle., etc, even in stage 2. She seems to just love the squash, sweet potatoes, green beans and carrots. Is that ok to keep giving?
I am a neurotic mom and petrified of choking, as I am so reluctant to try any "real foods". How long can I stay with stage 2? She has two little teeth in on the bottom and maybe two coming through on the top.
What "real" food would I start with??? Please, I need help! I feel so silly being unsure like this!!!
Thanks soo much!

Well DS is 9 months and still only on Stage 2's. I do try table food but he really doesn't like the consistency. He will eat puffs, bread, cold cuts, but only little pieces. He won't eat enough to make a meal yet so I stick to what he likes. He doesn't have any teeth though so I don't know if that helps or not??

The jar of puffs said to not give unless children are crawing or standing and my DD isn't so I haven't tried! Good for you for trying things...I am totally nervous to try!

Re: Calling All "Mommies" To Give Me Advice--Feeding Related
Abby is 10 months and still on stage 2 foods. She is crawling and can stand unassisted. She also just broke her first tooth. Basically, she is inconsistent with the guidelines that babyfood companies set. Some do it based on teeth and some do it based on physical development.
I can put any and every typical age appropriate finger food in front of her and she has ZERO interest. At day care, another baby may drop a puff or Cheerio on the floor and she would pick it up and look at it as if she discovered gravity but NEVER does she put it in her mouth. She prefers to gnaw on her fingers.
Sometimes she likes the jarred "meals" and sometimes she doesn't. She is such a picky (and inconsistent eater), I am grateful if she eats at all. Her pediatricians would like her to eat more but she gains weight with each visit and will likely be at triple her birth weight when she hits the one year mark.
I would suggest speaking with your pediatrican to come up with a plan and combine that with what you think is best. Good luck!

Re: Calling All "Mommies" To Give Me Advice--Feeding Related
first off all don't freak out!
DS absolutely hated stage 3 foods at that age, i think it's the combination of the puree with the pieces of food. at (almost) 10 months he is just now starting to like it.
do you give puffs? i would start with that, they dissolve in the mouth so it helps them learn how to chew.
DS still cannot handle larger pieces of food, everything has to be small or he will choke. but he can eat pretty much anything, he chews with his gums and he is good at that.
ETA: DS is very good with his pincer grasp (thumb and first one or two fingers) and loves absolutely any kind of table food you put in front of him. but it took practice and patience.

You can start w/ soft real foods like:
Pastina Avacado Laughing Cow Cheese Bananas smooshed lentils smooshed peas
I tried puffs w/ DS before he was crawling. He was sitting unassisted though. I think that's more important. I would only give him one puff at a time. It's also helpful w/ their finger dexterity.
ETA: I tried 1 Stage 3 food and I almost barfed. I wasn't giving that to DS. I went straight to pureed table foods. Knock wood a million times, he's a fantastic eater now.

My DS never liked stage 3, I think the mixed texture was too confusing for him. he never gagged on regular food, just the stage 3

Kaydyn got very confused with the stage 3 foods. She thorugh b/c I was feeding her with a spoon that she could just swallow and she would end up choking. She did much better with me putting little pieces of stuff on her high chair and letting her pick them up.
She didn't get teeth until almost 10 months so that's when we started puffs and stuff then.

Well, formula or BM is supposed to be their main source of nutrition for the first year, so if she is happy with the stage 2's, just keep up with them.
And like another OP said, my DS choked on stage 3's but never did with any other food at all.

If you are looking for more protein, my PED reccomended yogurt, hard boiled egg yolk and as DS gets closer to 9 months white chicken meat.
