camera buying advice
for all the camera experts, I need advice. Right now, we have a Nikon coolpix S1, which i'm hating more and more as time goes on. its about 3 years old, and the shutter lag is driving me crazy. I keep missing all these shots of DD. so, i got really fed up and decided its time for a new one. I know absolutely nothing about photography or digital cameras. Basically, i turn it on and click. so- would you buy another, better, point and shoot, or invest in a nikon D40? the thing that worries me about the D40 is the size, not sure if I will be bothered by carryign it everywhere. the way i see it- here are my options 1. buy a new, better point and shoot 2. buy a Nikon D40, and keep using my camera for on the go. or, if i get really fed up with it, biuy a cheap point and shoot with minimal shutter lag down the road.
what do you recommend? if recommendign point a shoot, which one? oh, and if going for the nikon d40, shoudl i get the extra lens? hwo is the weight /size on the d40?
ETA- what is a good price on the d40?

Re: camera buying advice
We had a REALLY nice point and shoot and I just got the D40 in Sept and there is no comparison. The D40 takes such nice pics and I don't even know what I'm doing most of the time! I would say invest in the SLR to capture those pics of your DD!!
ETA- I thought the size would bother me, but when I go out with DS I have TONS of stuff anyway so it just comes with us in the stroller or diaper bag.

Re: camera buying advice
I haven't played with newer P&S so I don't know how much the shutterlag has improved.
I say go to store where you can hold both types and try them out. I know that the shutterlag on a DSLR is still going to blow away a P&S but the delay on the newer point-and-shoots may be acceptable enough for you.
Try them out and see if you are not willing to compromise size and weight for speed.
But in general, I would absolutely recommend a DSLR over a P&S for capturing children.
As for lenses - it all depends on your budget. There are other accessories that you'll need/want for your DSLR such as a larger memory card, a carrying case etc (all depending on what your kit comes with) so an additional lens may not be your first consideration depending on budget.
