Can gutters not being kept clean and free cause a basement to get water?

Can blocked gutters cause a basement to get water, and if so, how? I can't figure out the correlation if so.

this is what i found when I did a quick search

LEAKING BASEMENTS - Clogged gutters are the number one cause of basement water problems. Roof water overflows and accumulates around the foundation. If this happens, basement leaks may be moments away.

and

Blocked Rain Gutters - Blocked gutters cause all the water draining off your roof, to spill right next to your basement walls. A large amount of rainfall concentrated next to your basement, is the recipe for basement water problems. The soil next to your home becomes so saturated, water then takes the path of least resistance; your basement.

HTH

Absolutely!!!

My sister's basement flooded because the gutters were clogged with leaves and all of the water built up around the house/foundation and window wells. Eventually the water had no where to go but in through the windows, etc. The gutters are there to remove the water away from the house.
So PSA - keep your gutters clean and clear!!!

Yup, happened to us. The previous homeowner installed gutter guards but didn't clean out the gutter before he did. Since we don't have eaves, the water spilled over the front of the gutter, onto the front of the house, and right down underneath the basement.

Once we took the guards off, cleaned the gutters, and put in a downspout extender to get it away from the foundation, our basement is so much drier.

YES! This happened to us! The house we just bought had not had the gutters cleaned in a long time (so gross!). And right after we closed we got a pretty heavy rain and it caused leaking into the basement. We cleaned out the gutters right away and haven't had a problem since. HTH!
