can i ask a question without starting drama?

Probably the nature of my question means no, but I'll give it a shot.

How come selling puppies in pet stores is not illegal?

I was just doing some reading on pet stores and came across the fact that in the U.K. and many other countries, it is illegal... so how come not here?

That is a very good question. I don't know. To me, it's puppy mills that should be made illegal. It breaks my heart what these poor animals go throughChat Icon

I agree with this. It should be stopped at the puppy mills. The people who run them should be put in jail and the key thrown away. However, once the dogs are in pet stores I believe that they deserve a chance too. I am not saying pet stores are right either but whether they are on the side of the street, in a shelter, or in a pet store all animals deserve a loving home regardless of where they came from.

Very true... I guess my thinking was that if selling puppies in pet stores was illegal then there would be no point for the puppy mills to operate - they would go out of business.

Re: can i ask a question without starting drama?

The starting point is the laws against cruelty to animals. I believe that one of the reasons that puppy mills are concentrated in a few states is b/c those states don't have good enforcement.

Another sad part is that so many pet shop dogs are sick or prone to getting sick b/c of conditions they came from or even how they are treated right in the pet shops, perhaps after hours, etc.

Re: can i ask a question without starting drama?

First of all, I want to commend you cuz I think you are the first person to approach this subject in a way that MAY not cause drama.
As far as the pet stores not selling puppies, I have to agree with those that said it has to do with animal cruelty.
The problem is there are so many pet stores and so few ASPCA officers to monitor them that they get away with murder - literally. It is so difficult to create laws to change the way things are currently done in the US, that the only way to do it is to prove cruelty.
The problem is, as SSDBK said, the puppy mills stay in business because the states they operate in have extremely loose laws regarding animal cruelty.

The end result is that the only way the public can help to stop puppy mills and pet store sales is to stop buying from them. If they don't sell what they have, they won't buy more.

BTW, the cruelty to puppies and kittens does not stop at the pet store. Most pet stores keep the animals in as bad or worse conditions than the mills.
If the people who stick up for pet stores knew how many of these animals starved to death or were just left to die in the attic they would be shocked. I knew a guy who worked for Shake-A-Paw for a few days and when he saw how many animals were up in the attic dead or dying he literally got sick and quit.

Re: can i ask a question without starting drama?

I don't think that people necessarily defent pet stores but instead defend that animals that are in them. Pet stores are horrible and it makes you want to save the puppies from living in a cage with 10 other dogs. I understand everyone's point of view on the situation. My question is what about the puppies that are already living in these pet stores? Don't they deserve a home too? It isn't their fault that they are a product of puppy mills.

Re: can i ask a question without starting drama?

Thats the problem, it's one big circle. You feel bad for the dog, so you buy it from the pet store, puppy mills get money and keep churning out the pups, then someone else goes and buys a dog, then the mills get more money.

It has to stop somewhere!

First step, dont go in the pet store! Then you won't be tempted. You want to save a dog? go to a shelter or the adoption days at Petco or PetSmart.
(i'm not singling out anyone, this is just a general thought for everyone in the country)

If we could even stop buying stuff at stores that sell dogs, thats a step forward too. Every cent out of their pockets counts.

No, of course it is no their fault. But unfortunately, buy buying the dogs there, one is supporting the puppy mills.

I found this story online, maybe it will give some insight on why it is so bad to buy a dog from a pet store:

The sad news is in the "behind the scenes" life of these pet store dogs. The sad news is in what the customer does
not see. EVERY purchase of a pet store puppy condemns that puppy's mother to a life in hell. No justification can
be made by thinking that you might be "saving" a puppy. What actually happens is that you have just purchased a
female animal's continued misery. These pet store dogs are not whelped in warm kitchens, they are whelped in
cages. They live their entire lives in a cage, sometimes in crowded and cramped conditions. These dogs were not
brought into the store via a Mercedes, but in TRUCKLOADS... packed in, just like old furniture and delivered as
merchandise. How horrible for a puppy to be ripped from it's mother at 6/7 weeks of age, stuffed in a cage with
other puppies and shipped off like chickens. I can only imagine the fear these poor babies must live through. The
maternal instinct is just as strong in dogs as in people and to have a whole litter prematurely ripped from a mother's side can have devastating and permanent emotional effects on both the mother and puppies. With every pet store
puppy purchase this practice is perpetuated. The breeders do not care about these dogs, they care about how much
the broker is going to pay them

Let me tell you the story of Bluver - She's a Pet Shop Momma.

She has lived her entire 9 years of life in a cage and has been bred twice every year to produce puppies for the Pet
Store trade.

Bluver doesn't know what grass is.

Bluver doesn't know what a toy is.

Bluver doesn't know the comforts of a soft bed.

Bluver doesn't know what it's like to lay on a couch and watch TV with someone who adores them.

Bluver doesn't know what taking a walk around the block means.

Bluver doesn't know what a treat is.

Bluver doesn't know the sound of whispered dreams and stories of an owner who adores them.

Bluver had only one purpose in life - and that was to fill the puppy stores with babies. She never even got to be a
mother nor was she ever able to take comfort in nurturing her babies. They were ripped from her side at 6 weeks of age, and those babies where stuffed in trucks and shipped across the country to various holding areas for
disbursement to pet shops.

Some of her children have been lucky - they have found good homes - others found their way into IGCA Rescue
and still others found their way to the pounds after people who impulse bought them at pet stores no longer wanted
them.

After nine years of giving, what do you think happen to Bluver? She was packed up, and sent to an AUCTION
BLOCK - where other Commercial breeders looked and poked at her and decided that at 9 years of age she didn't
have any VALUE. So she was placed in a cage to be destroyed.

Bluver got lucky that day - unlike several others who waited on death row with her. Bluver found a kind soul who
bought her from the destroy pen to let her live out her remaining days as a companion to someone.

Re: can i ask a question without starting drama?

PM are illegal, they are just not regulated enough. The lawmakers are not lobbied enough by their constituents to see that the laws are enforced. That is why it is so important to sign the petitions you see on-line, etc. Let the senators & representatives know that animal rights is important to you as a voter.

In order for the sale of puppies and kittens to be made illegal, they will need to be "reclassified" and no longer be livestock. That would also mean that any breeder would have to get licensed to sell their litters. Although this would do so much for eliminating BYB & Hobby breeders, it also would be very difficult to enforce at this time, since animal rights is not very high on most politician's lists.

I agree. And a lot of "breeders" who have good looking websites are pretty bad.

Re: can i ask a question without starting drama?

I bought my Boston TerrierChat Icon from a pet store with a HORRIBLE reputation. When my boyfriend and I went in to this store it broke our hearts (Puppy Depot in Coram). The conditions were disgusting. However....when I saw my little pup I KNEW we had to rescue him from those conditions (granted I wanted to buy them all). Pet stores all should have a STATE standard to meet up to and should be inspected monthly or bi-monthly. Puppy mills should be shut down...it's very sad.Chat Icon
