Can I ask an (illegal) immigration question
I keep hearing people saying that it would be impossible to deport 12 million people because it would kill the economy and lets face it 12 million is a pretty huge number. I was just wondering IF they decide, although I know they won't, to not grant anyone amnesty and say all illegals have to leave do they really think it would all happen at once? I mean I don't see planes full of people who shouldn't be here in a mass migration back to where they came from. I guess my question is what would be so wrong with saying that illegals must go home, no amnesty, and if they get caught there is no catch and release it's immediate deportation? I feel like Im missing something
ETA: Im not looking to start anything whatsoever... I am really curious.

Re: Can I ask an (illegal) immigration question
1. It would be a huge expense to deport all of them
2. There would be a lot of lawns that weren't mowed, dishes not washed, construction not complete.
I'm not saying I'm happy about having all of these non tax paying people here but I don't think deporting them is the answer. If it could be done, I would think granting amnesty, making them pay taxes and staying here would be good. After that anyone would doesn't pay taxes should get the boot.

Isn't it a huge expense to keep them here paying for services that they don't reimburse for with taxes? But I guess I didnt say it right, wouldn't the change be so gradual that it wouldn't have the immediate effect of jobs not getting done? I guess cause cops aren't just allowed to walk up to people and ask their status the ones that got in trouble would be the ones deported, right?

I feel that many of them do the jobs that no one else wants to do so we would feel the effect of them being deported. But they should pay taxes like the rest of us!

Same here!!
Sorry, I wish I could answer your questions and shed some light on it for you-- but it's just soooo complicated and touchy. It's like arguing abortion-- it's better off just leaving it alone.
I don't understand all of it either so you are not alone

Re: Can I ask an (illegal) immigration question
I have a question, is the reason that illegal immigrants are looked upon so unfavorably that they dont pay taxes? If so, I know alot of American born men who work off the books, and dont pay taxes...

It's the word illegal for me.
They are coming in the country against the law without following the rules.
Why should one person have to wait and go through the process and paperwork when another can bypass it?

Anyone who posts here has ancestors who were immigrants. All of them came to this country looking for a better way of life and entered the way they were supposed to. They learned the ways of this society and the language. They may have congregated into communities with like immigrants, but, when they entered the larger community they were eager to be a part of it and to contribute to it. People who come here illegally don't wish to do this. They want to take what they can, use the system to their advantage and send their resources back to another country. I don't care if they are brain surgeons or grave diggers. They contribute nothing to the society as a whole. Meanwhile, it is the honest, taxpaying citizens who take up the slack. We pay for their medical care, for the education of their children, for their housing. We shoulder the burden while they reap the benefits. I don't care what country they come from. They are like thieves in the night. They take what does not rightfully belong to them. Some say they do the jobs others do not want. However, it has been shown that they have taken jobs away because they work cheaper and employers (who contribute to the problem) save by not paying into the system. Are they hardworking? Absolutely. Do they deserve a fair day's wage for a day's work? Definitely. Should they be treated any differently than any other human being? No. However, they need to do what is right. They, simply, don't belong here or in any other country if they are here illegally. They need to pay their fair share, learn the language and be a part of society as a whole. American may be the "Great Melting Pot", but, if everyone in the pot doesn't work together for the benefit of the greater good, only disorder exists. This is a problem that will not be solved in a short period of time. It tooks years to evolve and it will take years to be corrected. Someday, someone will have the courage to step up and deal with it. Until then, there will be hatred, violence and a fractured social order.

Re: Can I ask an (illegal) immigration question
let me just give a few examples of how screwed up our government has let this get. There are ALOT of illegal immigrants in my DH's trade so I could tell stories all night, but here's good one. There's a very nice, hardworking young man that got wrapped up in a check cashing/money laundering scheme run by a guy from the same country. They got caught, one guy fled back "home" the other guy went to jail for 6 months & is now awaiting sentencing. He's out on bail now till the summer. Depending on how the judge feels he will get a few years in OUR prison system that we PAY for, or he may (and he is hoping) just get deported back "home". He can't leave now because he'll get arrested in the airport. Somebody please tell me why he wasn't asked to leave when he was caught living here illegally commiting crimes?
Here's another...everyone knows you can't take a paycheck w/o a SS# or green card, but did you know you don't have to be a citizen to own a business? So your "employer" can just write checks to your business as a subcontractor & after a few years of not filing taxes for your business, you just close it up....its not like the IRS can really come after you, because you aren't really here, you don't have a SS#.
One more, anyone on the east end notice the tremendous increase in Carolina Plates on cars? Sure you have, that's because the carolinas are still issuieng drivers Licenses to people w/o SS#'s unlike NY. We know a guy that met a woman from the same country as him online. She lives in N.C., they made a deal that if she put her cable bill in his name for one year, he'd pay it & then he could go down there to DMV with the utility bill & get a license & register his truck.
If any of the people I mentioned above spent one QUARTER of the energy they used on bucking the system to actually FOLLOW the system they'd have green cards already. My SIL became a full citizen in less than 2 years. It can be done & its done by lots of immigrants everyday, just not all of them.

So, illegals are getting federal tax ID numbers? You still need one for someone to pay money to your business.

Yes, they are getting federal tax ID #'s. You do not need to be a citizen or legal resident to own a business in the U.S.

what is it that you have against illegal inmigrants? my only problem is the "illegal" part.
I do wish that the legalization & naturalization process were easier and more "user-friendly" so to speak. But in our failing economy there is a tremendous amount of tax money (taken mostly from the middle-class) to pay for services for undocumented americans.
While I will admit that this is a governmental issue, and a huge shortcoming in policy, unfortunately it seems as though the lack of efficiency will be paid for by the undocumented americans, rather than the government coming up with a more efficient and feasible solution to bring the "illegal immigrants" to legal, documented status.
ETA: Of course Immigration is what this country was founded upon, and being first generation born in this country I can actually have conversations with my "immigrant ancestors" and understand what it was like. It meant coming to this country knowing that a cultural and lingual change was necessary, and that in order to live here there had to be study of the history. There would be a point during which you were really not a citizen of either country, but in the end you had to denounce your citizenship to your home country to become an American. And they did it.
