Can I collect unemployment for this?
I am so pizzed off, I could spit nails. I work p/t for a two atty firm (brother and sister). The atty that I do most of the work for has had a vacation scheduled since I was hired (Dec 09) and was scheduled to leave today. There was work left for me as usual (I have a bin) and when I was packing up to go home, the other atty (mine never came in today) told me that in essence since the atty was on vacation they dont need me to work for the next two weeks Dude...my family RELIES upon my salary to pay our rent He said the atty would be "in touch" with me when she gets back to let me know when to come back to work. Technically, I'm not laid off but STILL...I would say this is a reduction in my work no? Can I collect unemplloyment for this since I will not have worked for two weeks or do I have to be "officially" laid off? Have I mentioned how TICKED OFF I AM?

I don't know whether you could or couldn't collect unemployment - but I do know it will take more than 2 weeks for benefits to start.

But there is no waiting period is there? They dont withhold any weeks do they? Like with disability where you lose the first week? It has been so long since i collected unemployment I cannot remember

there is a one week waiting period.
You can certainly apply and see what happens.
Also, I would find another job.

I don't know anything about unemployment, but I totally agree with Bluize about looking for a new job.
It makes no sense to me that if there is work for you to do, just because the attorney is away, why does it have to wait?
Sounds like poor business practice to me all around.

i would think they are still responsible for paying you since they didnt inform you ahead of time that they will not be needing you when the atty is on vacay.
thats kinda effed up they did this...

My boss does this to me. When he goes on vacation for the week every year he tells me not to come in. I work p/t and dont get paid if I dont work. It annoys me but I kind of look at it as a vacation. But you have a family and rent that dependson your income.

I completely agree that they are not going to react well. they may even fire me...at least then my summer "vacation" would be paid

i have filed a claim for unemployment AND I have a job interview today.
