Can I really keep up my milk if DH does nighttime bottle feedings?
I'm worried that if I'm not nursing all night, I am diminishing my supply. Anyone else do this? Any suggestions??? TIA

How long have you been BF? Some women can skip the feeding fine, others can't. I would wait until you have been breastfeeding for about a month.

I hate to say it, but no-I wouldn't recommend it. At this point you are still establishing your milk supply. By skipping feedings you WILL mess up your supply. UNLESS you pump while DH feeds (which kind of defeats the purpose of why dh is feeding).

Poor thing- I know, it's so exhausting in the beginning.
During the day- TRY to sleep when she sleeps. I swear that it really helps to catch a few ZZZZ's during the day.
In the first few weeks, you should be in *survival mode*. Just get done what absolutely needs to get done- and that is: eat, sleep, feed the baby. DH HAS to do everything else for awhile.
Good luck- we're all here for you!!!

ETA: By killing yourself now with the round the clock feedings, you will be rewarded with an abundant supply. If you have a low supply, your daughter will always want to nurse.

Thank you so much Amy. I was on the right track and then my incision got infected and I need nursing care at home They keep telling me to sleep at night but I noticed the last two days she is constantly hungry and therefore is taking more formula...so frustrating...thanks so much for you advice, I really appreciate it. I will be up tonight for sure!

Don't get up -- let someone bring her to you in bed. Someone else can handle any diaper changes and getting her settled back to sleep after she has eaten!

Re: Can I really keep up my milk if DH does nighttime bottle feedings?
I just wanted to offer you some and tell you that you have to do what works best for you and your baby. For the first two weeks of DS's life I fed on demand and got no sleep except for an hour or so here and there. I felt myself getting more and more run down but kept pushing myself. Well, I ended up getting really sick for days. Then, I got an infection (mastitis). I NEVER get sick - haven't taken antibiotics in 10 yrs and just kept getting one thing after another.I needed to get at least a 4 hour stretch of sleep which I could not get.
Since then i go one 4-6 hr stretch every night w/o puming or feeding. Maybe it messed up my supply - I'm not sure how I would know - but, so far I have had enough milk to feed the baby and a fridge full of stored BM. But, this is what I had to do to stay healthy - to me being healthy and happy and having energy to take care of my baby was more important than the milk supply - and I just wasn't able to do both.

You won't diminish your supply. I did this in the beginning. Then I would pump first thing in the morning, before I fed DD. I had 10 oz of milk every morning- and I did it for a year.

10 oz.??? Good grief, I am lucky if I get 1 oz. after 10 minutes! Good for you!

I second this. Have DH bring her to you, feed her laying down in bed and hand her back over. My mom stayed with me for a while and did this. It was wonderful.

I am sort of in a similar situation. I have an infection and on heavy duty antibiotics so I am SO run down. This was why I took the rest at night. I have felt so guilty about it though but wow did I need to sleep. I think I will skip one also and see how that goes. I never thought it would be this hard

If you're going all night without feeding, aren't your breasts leaking or ready to explode when you get up in the morning?
The first time DS slept through the night (not normal) I woke up in a puddle of my milk. He was about 3 weeks old then.

I think it really depends on your DC too. I read alot of girls posting that their DC's sleep from feeding to feeding several times a day. Mine does not so for me this is what works.

I never really go more than 6.5 hours. I always wear breast pads so they absorb most of it - sometimes my shirt does get a little wet. And, yes, they are ready to explode at that point but after DC nurses a couple times it goes away.
