Maybe because my calling it a "medical" board it might imply that medical advice can be found there (well, duh)... but it might imply expertise. there would have to be a disclaimer like on all medical sites saying you shouild see your own doctor..
I'm just speculating., I don;t know exactly.

Why don't we call it health? That way any questions we want to ask each other for simple personal advice could go there?

Re: Can I request a new forum board???
I like the "health" idea. I probably wouldn't visit it much either. It's hard enough just keeping up with this section LOL.
I guess it's just more annoying then anything when people try to get diagnoses via the web when it could be a zillion different things that's wrong with them.
Not trying to start drama, but I have noticed several posts like that on here as of late. I even responded to one of them. Maybe I'll stop since it's not really my cup of tea ;).
Pregnancy board does sound helpful in general though.

Re: Can I request a new forum board???
I think it might turn into one of the latest rarely visited boards, with people cross-posting to NFR for more traffic to diagnose their problems.
Look how much everyone begged for "looking for love" and the "story board" forums...

Re: Can I request a new forum board???
There are a lot of posters on this board with random ailments. It could e a great place to get advice, get updates, get support, whine, cry or whatever. AND loads of time when medical type questions are asked, it's not even for the poster but rather for a sister or friend or some other important person in thier life. My frame of mind over the last few board requests has been "ooh great, another board no one will use." My frame of mind on this is very different because even if just TWO people (heck could be Jen adn I) find the support they need during a harrowing time, well that makes the board worth it. After all, this board isn't ALL about drama, gossip or talking about the latest fashion. COMMUNITY and helping someone in your community talk thru something that could potentially be very difficult means everything.
I just see that it can be used for so much. There are papers I had to have drawn up that most thirty (ish-or something) people don't THINK of. Amazing advice could be found here about Advance directives, donating organs and drawing up a will.
I am posting for something I believe in. I believe if we are going to have dead boards let's have dead boards that can bring a few people more purpose than anything you can imagine. Heck, let's replace the dull "pointless" ones with new ones to try.
I'll end with how thankfull I am to have this place to talk about what I am going thru and that I can't even begin to express nor explain how being put in the same place at the same time as JenG (hell, are screen names should have pulled us together) has helped me. Being able to talk to her and hear about Rob and getting inspired when he hit new milestones, well I guess I can only say that until you need something like thatin your life, you may simply not understand it.
This board can make a world of good for a few people and I wish people could see THAT rather than the selfish idea of it ever benefiting themselves.

I think that's a much better idea.
To be honest, I don't think we really need another board -- it will just lead to more x-posts (b/c that board won't get much traffic) and more people asking why their threads got moved.
Maybe it's just me, but the medical posts here don't bother me and I feel there are enough boards with too little traffic already.

I don't know if this was directed at me, but if it was, I think you and I are talking about 2 completely different things. I see the benefits of discussing what you mentioned in your post. Resource sharing.........we can all benefit from that.
And just having a "support network" to vent to where other people can understand and relate to what you are going through, or if not, just offer support in general.
I am talking about using the board as a replacement for a real live professional.
I mean, I find it hard to believe that even if there are real doctors on here, that they would be able to give a thorough and accurate diagnosis without actually seeing the person face to face. That's all that I was getting at.
I know that's a pretty common sense thing to a lot of people, to see your doctor and take posts on a message board with a grain of salt, but not always.

I wasn't directing it to you, at all. I agree and learned, there is NOTHING like seeing your doctor and seeing what is REALLY up. I waited from 2/1 thru 5/22 untill I took that advice. Lived in a LOT of pain and wouldn't want anyone to live life just thinking an online diagnosis is suffice.

Re: Can I request a new forum board???
For the record I would be all for the board and I think I even mentioned it once before...but I thought ti might not fly for legal reasons, but I think it would be GREAT. For example I have fibromyalgia..I only know one person IRL who has it, so it's good to be able to talk to people who understand..I also think someone posted symptoms and I suggested maybe it's fibro, and if that's the case then she can ask her doc and find solutions, so I personally would love it..

That would be a great place for Dr. referrals also.
I agree. I will probably get flamed for saying this, but one thing that annoys me about message boards in general, is that some people put too much stock in asking medical questions on them, when they should be asking their doctor.
Can't really speak for this board too much, but on another one I go to, it drives me batty because I think people use it as a replacement for the need for serious therapy. That is all. Carry on.........just the social worker in me coming out..........
Im going to agree with you 100%. People really need to keep in mind that though some people here are doctors, nurses and other professionals that could provide advice, most of us are not. I think it could possibly open up a can of worms and a bit of liability for Ron.
This is exactly what I was talking about.
But I think it can be a good sounding board and a good place to talk to other people who have similar problems, but you don't want liability issues.

Re: Can I request a new forum board???
OK, cool! I didn't think so, but wasn't sure.......
Well, I think someone mentioned already up thread the importance of a disclaimer on the top of that board like "it's recommended that this section is for discussion purposes only and you ultimately follow up with a medical professional in person regarding major questions regarding your overall health".

That's great that you might've been able to point someone in the right direction.
Knowing how busy and often dismissive doctors are nowadays, it's good to get ideas of what could be going on with someone's health.
Sometimes I think people may have an idea of what the issue is, but seeing it written makes it real or something. So in that instance, if it's not used for the wrong reasons, then I am certainly all for it.
Personally speaking, I think really where I've run into the stuff that really bothers me is what I mentioned in the beginning..........the mental health issues stuff.
On the board I mentioned where I am a regular on, we were really afraid for someone that he was going to commit suicide because he refused to listen to anyone and get the help of a professional. At many points, the mods and the owner of the board had to get involved. Several people (self included) had met him IRL, and I was very happy to hear that he finally got the help he needed.
He was unfortunately also personalizing when people wrote about their own successess on the board, and comparing himself, thinking he was a failure.
It's hard...........the internet attracts all kinds........
Has anything like that ever happened here?

I don't think we've had that, but I can defintiely see how people can and do use boards in place of actual therapy or medical advice to varying degrees. And I mean if venting about your in-laws saves you money on a therapist, then that's one thing, but if there is a real mental condition going un-treated, it's something else.
So while I would really like the board, I'm with you and Goldi in hesitating about it.

Re: Can I request a new forum board???
This very site was created as a place where families can reach out to other families. The entire concept is support. Support networks and even referrals on a "health" or "medical" board are one thing, but when people give medical advice it is a completely different story and it DOES happen. A disclaimer would be a must.
You would be surprised how many people put their faith in what they see on a message board before they will set one foot in a doctor's office. Diagnoses are made, treatment options are discussed and then people come back saying all is well - nothing to worry about. Meanwhile they are unnecessarily panic stricken.
And no doctors are not always right, but as patients, we also have the right to question them or seek second opinions.

Re: Can I request a new forum board???
I think a medical board for support would be a wonderful idea. I also agree that it wouldn't hurt to put a disclaimer on the board to make sure to see your physician, etc. I don't see it so much as a place for diagnosis - but more so for support, doctor referrals, general questions.
