Can someone PLEASE explain why ABC airs the Ten Commandments at Easter.....?
...this idea always leaves me and it is something I will never understand.
Year after year they show the Ten Commandments (one of my favorite epic movies of all time) on ABC just before Easter Sunday. It is clearly the story of Passover and took place more than 1000 years before the birth of Christ. Passover is not for a few weeks yet.
I realize that I do not read the New Testament and that the Last Supper may have actually been a Passover seder, but I still dont get it.
Any thoughts to educate and inform me?

Leslie... this is the age old question I have asked year after year. I just don't get it. I keep telling my father that we can just put this movie on in the background, while we eat our sedar meal instead of having to read, read, read... eat, then read read read some more. Would just save so much time and be just as entertaining if not more than us just going around the table.

I believe it is because Christians believe Christ fulfilled Old Test. prophesies- without everything that happened in the Old Test, Christ wouldn't have come to be.

That makes a lot of sense, but it is a very hard idea for a Jew to swallow since the way this story is portrayed in the movie has it practically lifted from the Passover Haggadah.

I am sure there is a better explanation for it. tonight at Easter Vigil mass there were quite a few readings from the Old Test- specifically two from Genesis and one from Exodus- so these parts of scripture are very important to Christians too. In addition to Christ fulfilling prophesy- Christians also believe him to be the Passover lamb.
Of course it would be a hard idea for a Jew to swallow- b/c if Jew's did, well then they'd be Christian i think

Honestly I think that TV execs just say "It's Easter - we need some programming with a religious theme."

Thus my comment about the Disney exec - Disney owns ABC.
Regardless, Happy Easter to all.

usually Easter & Passover are much closer together. i wouldn't be surprised if the person in charge of programming ever even WATCHED the movie.

Although it does seem a bit odd to air this at Easter, it does have relevance to Easter.... Last night, at the Easter vigil, the Old Testament is proclaimed. there are FOUR readings of the Old Testament at the Easter Vigil, (any other Mass during the liturgical year only have one) including the one where Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt as well as FOUR pslams, from the book of Pslams.
The Christian tradition, especially at Easter, celebrates the Jewish tradition, as Jesus was a Jew. We believe in all that is said in the Old Testament as well. In addition, the Last Supper was Jesus' last celebration of the Passover seder and Christians believe Jesus was the Passover lamb.

Re: Can someone PLEASE explain why ABC airs the Ten Commandments at Easter.....?
The Hebrew Calendar varies from year to year. I never count on coordinating holidays with Christian holidays. I remember years when Chanukah started as early as the end of November and as late as January.
Bottom line is that someone isnt paying attention and frankly, I dont expect them too. Jewish people make up a very tiny part of the population (barely 2%- IF that much) of this country - though not in NY. It is what it is. I still love the movie and it is a very important part of Judeo-Christian history.

Re: Can someone PLEASE explain why ABC airs the Ten Commandments at Easter.....?
this is what i know (which isn't much)
*the last supper WAS the passover seder *Jesus is considered the passover lamb
oh, and the difference between Jews and Christians is a little more than just accepting Jesus as the Messiah... you can be a Jew and believe that Jesus is the Christ.
hope that helps... some

Ok, me stating that there is no reference to Easter is inaccurate. I did know that the Last Supper was in fact a seder. However, the movie in itself is the simply story of Passover, not the story of Easter.
I think someone else had it right-- Disney wanted some religious programming. It happens every year, and it's not as obvious when Passover and Easter fall closer together on the calendar.

Thank you. The info does help me understand why it is played at Easter.
But to me (as I will not speak for all Jews), Jesus is not the Passover lamb which may explain why I at this time of year. Passover is a BIG holiday for me and at face value, its hard for me personally to see this story in any other way than the Exodus from slavery in Egypt.
I do not, have not and will not read New Testament scriptures so I wouldn't be privy to this information. Thank you for educating me. I would rather be informed than perceived as ignorant. All responses have been very helpful.

Re: Can someone PLEASE explain why ABC airs the Ten Commandments at Easter.....?
I think I know why it is played at Easter...(please someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) Easter and Passover are supposed be at the same time...Eastern Orthodox Christians and Western Christians originally always followed the Passover timing. At some point in the history of Christianity a switch was made in the calendars. However not all Christians made this change...Eastern Orthodox Christians (Greek, Romanian, etc.) never switched (I believe this is one of the main differences in the Greek Orthodox and Catholic Churches) Greek Easter is always at the time of Passover...because holy week for us coincides with Passover week... I hope I explained it correctly...therefore the ten commandments should be played during Passover (which was originally the holy week for all Christians) I guess ABC never got the memo about the switch..

I don't see how that Easter and passover are "supposed" to be at the same time since the Hebrew calendar is never the same from year to year.
There are 13 months and the days in the months vary from 29-30 days. Obviously Christians follow the Old Testament, but I would tend to doubt how the timing would be exact between the schools of faith.
On the morning of Simchat Torah (usually in the fall depending on the Hebrew calendar), the last read section of Deuteronomy and the first of Genesis are read out in the synagogue. Though Deuteronomy is not the "end" of the Old Testament, it's when we stop and start all over. This is why Simchat Torah, though one of the lesser known holidays to those outside of Judaism, is one of Judaism's most holy of days.
Im not looking to cause a rift or anything. I am actually enjoying this dialogue. Thanks again!
