Re: Can someone PLEASE explain why ABC airs the Ten Commandments at Easter.....?

I do too! Ill be honest, with all of the weddings and Christenings that DH and I have been to in the past 2 years, I have spent more time in the Catholic Church than in a Jewish synagogue. I love how faith brings people together and gives hope for the future.

Actually, one of the last times I was in a Church was for the Christening of our best man's twins. I hadn't outed myself as PG yet, but at the end of the mass, there was a blessing for expecting parents and though I am not Catholic, I said a hearty "AMEN" when the blessing was done. It doesn't matter to me where good faith comes from as long as it is good.

I also noticed that one Church had in its weekly literature, a prayer that does not alienate those of other religions. It gives them words to use so they can pray without compromising their own beliefs. I was especially appreciative of that.

When we got married, we decided to have programs (which is not terribly common at Jewish weddings) to explain our traditions to our non-Jewish guests. We received many comments of appreciation and thanks because so many of our guests had never been to a Jewish wedding before.

Easter and Passover are supposed be at the same time...Eastern Orthodox Christians and Western Christians originally always followed the Passover timing.

I don't see how that Easter and passover are "supposed" to be at the same time since the Hebrew calendar is never the same from year to year.

There are 13 months and the days in the months vary from 29-30 days. Obviously Christians follow the Old Testament, but I would tend to doubt how the timing would be exact between the schools of faith.

On the morning of Simchat Torah (usually in the fall depending on the Hebrew calendar), the last read section of Deuteronomy and the first of Genesis are read out in the synagogue. Though Deuteronomy is not the "end" of the Old Testament, it's when we stop and start all over. This is why Simchat Torah, though one of the lesser known holidays to those outside of Judaism, is one of Judaism's most holy of days.

Im not looking to cause a rift or anything. I am actually enjoying this dialogue. Thanks again!

Orthodox Easter is never the same from year to year...this year it is the last week in April I believe the 27th..know in Greek school we first learned the Old testament and then the New Testament

I'm no expert here so I am willing to learn new things

Easter isn't the same time for Christians every year either. As I understand it, it is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox, so the date changes every year, but is in March or April.

As for the original question about the Ten Commandments, I also think some TV exec decided they just needed "religious programming." For Christians, Easter is the most important and holiest of feast days. So when the family gets together for Easter dinner, I guess they need something other than "It's the Easter Beagle Charlie Brown" to watch Chat Icon

Fair enough. Big "DUH" on my part.

I think I know why it is played at Easter...(please someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Easter and Passover are supposed be at the same time...Eastern Orthodox Christians and Western Christians originally always followed the Passover timing.

At some point in the history of Christianity a switch was made in the calendars. However not all Christians made this change...Eastern Orthodox Christians (Greek, Romanian, etc.) never switched (I believe this is one of the main differences in the Greek Orthodox and Catholic Churches)

Greek Easter is always at the time of Passover...because holy week for us coincides with Passover week...

I hope I explained it correctly...therefore the ten commandments should be played during Passover (which was originally the holy week for all Christians) I guess ABC never got the memo about the switch..

your post regarding timing is incorrect. Passover and all other jewish holidays vary from year to year because they follow the Hebrew calendar... way different from ours... by over a thousand years.

The Western Church (Roman Catholic) has Easter as the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. this is the earliest it has been in a LONG time and will not be this early again until the next century. We follow the Roman calendar.

The Eastern Orthodox Easter is different from all of the above because litrugically, they follow the Julian calendar.

Also your point about Passover being the holy week for all CHRISTIANS??? That makes no sense. Holy Week is a Christian holiday, Passover is a Jewish holiday. Christ was a Jew and thus him and the people of his time and place celebrated Passover. Holy Week is the week where Christians celebrate the last 3 days of his life and then his resurrection. Yes, Holy Week probably was not formalized until a few hundred years afterwards, and there were probably many Jews that believed in Christ but continued to celebrate Passover until Christianity was more formalized.... but I would think that to say that Passover was a holiday for Christans would be inaccurate.

Maybe, because many stories of the jewish bible have been lifted by other religions.

Not sure I would agree with the fairness of that statement. I think perhaps "lifted" is not the right word, rather "shared" or "acknowledged."

Also, I don't know if I feel comfortable referring to anything as the "Jewish Bible." The 5 books of Moses are referred to as the Pentateuch or Torah as they stand apart from the rest of the Old Testament. I don't think any non-Jews would argue that point either.

Thank you. The info does help me understand why it is played at Easter.

But to me (as I will not speak for all Jews), Jesus is not the Passover lamb which may explain why I Chat Icon at this time of year. Passover is a BIG holiday for me and at face value, its hard for me personally to see this story in any other way than the Exodus from slavery in Egypt.

I do not, have not and will not read New Testament scriptures so I wouldn't be privy to this information. Thank you for educating me. I would rather be informed than perceived as ignorant. All responses have been very helpful.

Leslie, I think you can speak for all Jews. Granted, I am not one, but I would think that if you or other Jews, proclaimed Jesus as the passover lamb, then you would no longer be Jewish. The Christian tradition, like the Jewish one, does see the story as the exodus from Egypt.

However, from that, in the Christian tradition and in the New testament, Jesus is symbolically referred to as the paschal lamb. This may explain it better.... stolen off Wikipedia, not the most reliable srouce, but this makes sense to me as a Catholic, where Christ constantly referred as the Lamb of God:

"The Biblical significance of the title is rendered in the context of earlier lamb symbolism.

The blood of the paschal lamb of the Old Testament protects and saves the Israelites in Exodus 12. This link is made explicit in 1 Corinthians 5:7. For Paul, Christians are saved by Christ as their true paschal lamb.

The Old Testament also testifies to the earlier practice of sin offerings as a possible means of atonement. Lambs could be used in these offerings (e.g. Leviticus 4:32-34 and 5:6), and this link is strongly suggested by Gospel of John 1:29 and 1 Peter 1:19. Just as in Judaism sins could be forgiven through the offering and the pouring out of the blood of an "unblemished" lamb (cf. Lev 4:32), so Christians believe they can be freed from sin by the blood of Jesus, the unblemished Lamb of God. See Sin for further discussion about the concept of sin and the means of atonement in Judaism."

Nope. Otherwise it would take much longer than one Jewish Calendar year to read. I am not exactly sure where the Old Testament ends and the New Testament begins - I think it depends on who you ask.

I TOTALLY get it from a Catholic perspective since that explanation - makes perfect sense now. But I still wouldnt speak for all Jews. Besides, the big guns who work up the block from me on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights do not feel I practice Judaism anyway.

this is why if you are Jewish, accepting Jesus as the lamb of God, in and of itself, doesn't make you a Christian. if i understand correctly, Jews are saved by The Law, where Christians are saved by Grace... so, you can be a Jew AND accept Jesus as the Messiah... they're called JEWS FOR JESUS

For example, Catholics would recognize all the books in the Old Testament and all in the New...in fact, Catholics have additional books in our New Testament that Protestant denominations have taken out of their Bible.

We do not get through the whole Bible in a liturgical year. We tend to focus on the key readings from the Old Testament and the 4 Gospels, and they tend to repeat themselves each year.... but we still believe in the other books...

The New Testament begins with the 4 Gospels, beginning with the Gospel according to Matthew. All 4 of the Gospels basically outline the story of Jesus' life and teaching. They vary a bit in terms of language but essentially it is the same story. Each Gospel begins with the Birth of Christ.

I just checked my Bible and the Old Testament ends with the Book of Malachi (spelling?) written approximately 455 BC.

This is correct. As a matter of fact, this year is the earliest that Easter has been in 95 years.

On a side note, the Vatican council that determined these things chose the first full moon after the Spring Equinox to ease the Pagans into following Contantine's conversion of the Roman Empire. "Easter" although Christian in nature, is timed in accordance with an old Pagan holiday. Chat Icon

I think it's simple really...

what happened in the Old Testament is just as important to christians as the new testament.

this is generally the "time of year" for many important holidays in different religions.

I wouldn't have questioned it had they shown it during passover...even though the story is my religions history as well.

ETA: this is the thing I find most wonderful about religions...the similarities. I think that if your are a practicing catholic, the Old Testament is just as wonderful as the new testament. we didn't throw them away when our "new" religion was formed.

the story of Moses is very relevant to the coming of Jesus..that is most likely what it was played.

that OR...the people of ABC just play ANY religious movie they can get the rights to. Chat Icon

by all rights. they should REPLAY it for Passover. it's a beautiful story.

I just wanted to say that thanks to this thread I looked up the history of Passover and now this Catholic has a much better understanding of its significance, so thank you. That said, I don't have any idea why they show Ten Commandments at Easter-so no insight there except it is good watching.
