can someone tell me about the american museum of natural history
im taking an 8 year old there tomorrow. any suggestions?
can you just walk in and walk around? are there tours? etc..

I have never taken a tour, its pretty much easy to walk around yourself.you can get a mapof the building when you go in.

I worked there for a few years...so I know a few things. They do have free tours - but I'm not sure how kid friendly they are. You can ask at the volunteer desk about them. I would suggest walking around the halls - my favorite is the Hall of Ocean Life - it was renovated a few years ago and it's very cool.
The Planetarium is nice too if this particular 8 year old is interested in space...although the space show is a bit pricey. There are special exhibits in the main museum that cost more than the regular admission - but sometimes they are well worth the extra money. Sorry I cannot be more specific - it's been 5 years since I worked there.

without sounding like a total nerd.. i  the museum of natural history. (ss teacher  )
im pretty sure there are tours. but i dont think they are necessary. Go slow.. theres soooo much to look at!!! HAVE FUN!!!

I love that museum. So much to see for an 8 year old. He may like the Planetarium. They do have shows during the day.

my most favorite museum!  I could seriously go there 100x and never get sick of it.
LOVE the Neanderthal exhibit, the gem stone exhibit  and the sea mammals!

i was just there saturday, i always thought it was just a suggested donation to go in but you have to pay to get in,
i think the platenarium shows are always the coolest, and the dino bones
