Can someone tell me about towns in NJ and any experiences moving there from NYC/LI
We are considering a move. Our needs are to be in a good school district (we have elementary aged kids), not too crazy a commute to lower Manhattan for DH (around an hour), and to be reasonably near any NY border bc I am only licensed to work in NY. I work part time and would look for something maybe in Staten Island. Wouldn't mind driving 20 to 30 minutes to get there. My husband would love to get a little property, like a half acre to an acre, but not sure how in the cards that would be with also wanting to be closer to NY. I saw some nice houses in the 350 k range in Piscataway with like half an acre, but boy were the taxes high, almost just like LI. Any suggestions are welcome or stories of you loving or hating the move you made. Thanks so much.

Imo NJ (in the metro area) will be no different than Living on LI. Taxes are not cheap. Land isn't plentiful. You would have to move further away from the city to be able to get more for your money.

Mahwah is a nice area. No idea of the cost of living, but we go there frequently in the Winter. Close to NYC, nice people, and nice neighborhoods.

My SIL lives in Pompton Lakes (in the Wayne area) and her neighborhood is really quiet and friendly. The schools are good too, but they do not provide busses. I do not know what she pays for taxes.

I live in Monmouth County and love it. It's central NJ. You get more for your money here and depending on where in NJ you can have a good commute. My dad commuted every day to the city on the bus. It took about an hour and a half though. It is easier to get into the city from the LIRR, but still great areas in NJ to get on the train or take a ferry that can be shorter than an hour and a half.

There are a lot of very nice areas of Bergen County, which is right on the NY border. In particular I really like Westwood, Hillsdale, Old Tappan, Mahwah, Park Ridge, Ridgewood, and Washington Township.

When I was very young we used to live in Middlesex county and my father used to commute to NYC by bus. I think it was an hour bus ride. I have no idea how the area is like now, I do know that East Brunswick was a really nice area but I think its expensive.

When we started house hunting we started in NJ..first Essex County and then Bergen County. IMO the areas that were nice with good school districts had taxes just as high if not higher than LI and houses just as $$. The areas that were more affordable and in our price range had mediocre school districts and high taxes..tis why we ended up on LI.
I do have a coworker who lived in Cedar Grove, NJ (Essex County) and liked it a lot. Good schools and taxes were more reasonable then the surrounding areas. Commute to lower Manhattan was a little over an hour though like 1hr 15 minutes or so. Your DH could cut that in half though by driving to Hoboken and taking the ferry over downtown Manhattan.

I work in Edison NJ and a lot of people commute in from Staten Island. I believe the school district is pretty good. East Brunswick is suppose to have a really good school district and there are a lot of people who commute into NYC. You may also want to check out Woodbridge.

We live in west Milford NJ. Schools are great, infact my sons school teacher just won best teacher in all of Passaic county NJ. My ex still lives in ny so I do the commute every other weekend to long island NY. The drive can be ehhh depending on traffic. Houses here are big, with land, and affordable. We are right on the border of Warwick NY, its literally up my street. So your commute would be real short. FM if you need more info.
