Last year, got my then-3.5 year old:
- Melissa & Doug Puppet theater
- various puppets (an animal set, and 2 Melissa & Doug dress-up ones
Also, she LOVES the Trio building set. Got it at Kohl's last year for a great price:

Also, the Mickey DVDs that come with a Mickey Mote (Mickey remote control that interacts with movie) is really cute.
Lots of dress-up outfits & accessories

my son will be 3 1/2 at christmas.
We don't buy him much. He gets a stocking and maybe 4 gifts. He gets so much from everyone else, that we don't go overboard.
Probably:
-polar express thomas train
-leap frog tablet thingy
-geotrax
-and maybe some movies (lion king, cars2, etc).
What is the polar express Thomas train?

I've only thought of getting rid of all the baby gear by Christmas to make room for new toys for the kids.
2.5yo DS will be getting the leap pad and a bike. i'll also get him a bunch of imaginext dinosaurs. i can't think of anything else.

I am going to suggest movies and board games.
We got him a Leap pad and will get him a few Thomas trains (he has 1,236,443 trains already!!). Trying to find a shark robe and towel for him too!

I guess Thomas made a polar express train years ago. You can't get it in the store anymore, but you can get it off ebay.

We plan on getting our 2.5 year old son:
Drum Set
Fresh Market Kitchen (Step2)
Play food and coffee maker for kitchen
Geotrak toy story train
Lets rock Elmo and accessories
Floor puzzle
ABC frig magnetics for Leapfrog
color wonder paint set
books
Grandparents are getting him the LeapPad and train table.
