Can you explain how skype works?
I am trying to set it up so my kids can chat with their cousins in London, but I don't get it We call them thru the computer? Anyone know what the fee is for connection? I can see the package plans (which seem really cheap - like $1/month for an hour) but I don't want to get nailed with costs I didn't anticipate.

Re: Can you explain how skype works?
do they have internet service?
if so, it's free..
it works like IM but you can do video..
you can also use Yahoo or hotmail or any of those and turn on the video..
For Skype, make up an account and download the software..
then once it's up and running, you will add your family member's name to your friends list.. you will see when they are on and you can "call" them and they will get it on their end to accept or not, if they do, just turn on the video feature and they will do the same and that's it.
it's very easy
eta that I use www.oovoo.com also and it's awesome because you can do video with up to 6 people at once!

Re: Can you explain how skype works?
Thanks! I thought it was free. I remember using it old-school at work (with microphone and all) but I just went to sign up and there were fees listed...

The fees are if you would like to call their telephone/cell phone - if you are doing video chat, it's free (ILs use the other service when they travel out of the country since it's more likely to catch myself or DH on our cells than on the computer without pre-arranging the call).
