can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?

Before entering kindergarten could your child read?

eta: I should respond for my own son. He can read his own name and some basic sight words. He has memorized a few books but can't read on his own yet. We have the cc on our tv and DH and I read to him/DD every day.

He's reading but not nearly an expert. He tries hard and wants to read. He likes Biscuit type books. Much further along then my older one was at just turning 5. My older son knew sight words mostly starting K and had very little interest in reading. Took off well though in K.

I can't vote because I'd need to vote twiceChat Icon so I'll just reply.

DD is full on reading. Level 2 to 3 readers. Don't ask me how this happened. I think she is just able to isolate phonic sounds and remember them very well. She just started on her own and took off.

DS is reading level 1. He gets some of the common site words confused... where, when, etc. He's much more math/number obsessed.

Re: can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?

Both DC were very early readers, and very advanced. (They aren't advanced in all subjects, but reading happens to be one area they excel in.)

I know many experts might disagree with my "findings", but I honestly think the TV helped their reading a lot. We have a DVR, and DS learned how to read his favorite shows on the listings very early. We would say "No, sorry, we don't have that show recorded...", and he would say "It's right there!".... Chat Icon Chat Icon
We also have the Closed Captioning on the TV all the time, so they are always seeing the text of what they are hearing. They also learned early on that there are typos and mistakes in the CC, and they tell us what's wrong with the captions.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Everyone in DW's family and my family are avid readers, which I'm sure is a big factor, too. Both DC have a full bookcase in each of their rooms, there's a full bookcase in the hallway that I built, and we have a library room dedicated to floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that I built.

My DS was barely reading going into K. A decent amount of sight words, some sounding out, but really very rudimentary. His reading absolutely took off during K. I would say he's now well above grade level in terms of reading. Things just clicked.

That is INSANE that some of your kids are already reading going INTO Kindergarten. DS recognizes certain words and can sound them out but he is definitely not reading.

It's funny because when my oldest DD was around 4 I thought it was crazy that she didn't read nor had any interest! Family legend has it I started reading at 3 Chat Icon and I've always always been a huge reader.

Although she knew some sight words, she really didn't read until K...and I was also surprised because she's very disciplined, very verbal, bright and loves school.

Now my younger DD is going into K in September and she's basically teaching herself to read and I've been shocked! This child is very stubborn, difficult, angry, etc...Chat Icon

Just goes to show...we're all different!

When entering K:
One was reading the reader books at 3-4 yo. Happened on his own although I did do the "Teach Your Baby To Read" thing when he was little which is really sight reading. Could write words (some phonetically; some correctly).

The other was sounding out words & reading slowly. Could write (with some backwards letters & backward numbers).

Another thing is I never counted that they could read if it was a book they're heard before because most kids memorize books & pretend to read.

For anyone concerned or has a kid that isn't reading. DON'T STRESS ABOUT IT. They will catch up! The one thing that I think helps the most is having you read to them. It was always a big part of bedtime (and still is depending on what book they're interested in).

No. She can recognize some words, her name, her sisters name, etc.

Honestly, I'm not worried. She's smart and I know that she'll learn in kindergarten.

No. She knows site words, her name , her sisters name, and most family names. (ie, mommy daddy grandma etc) She can also read a few words per page in simple level 1 books, but she can not sit down and read a full book yet.

DD can read pretty well I think. She started reading around her 4th birthday. She gets lazy sometimes with sounding out longer words. I figure they'll fine tune her skills once she's in kindergarten.

I have one that's on sight words right now, but my older one read only his name going in. He rejected reading completely. By the end of first grade he had caught up and actually went passed grade level. I don't think there is a strong correlation.

There is actually research on this. Literacy in Finland is super high and experts believe that it's bc 50% of Finnish TV is in another language and they read so manyI subtitles.

Robbie could read well before Kindergarten.

Noah could not read at all and had ZERO interest in learning.

Most kids (from my understanding) are not reading before kindergarten.. but like Barb said they catch up fast.

DS is going into 1st grade but last year when he was going into into Kindergarten he could only recognize his name. Now he reads very slowly basic words that he can sound out.

Us too! He just came home from K one day and was reading words around the house. He's now going into first and can fully read and write above grade level.

can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?

DS (who is now 11) was going into kindegarten fully reading, probably a few years above his grade level. He started reading at 3.5. This is not normal.

DD (who is now going into first grade) was not reading going into kindergarten whatsoever. She could write her name but didn't recognize it written out. She's probably dyslexic (too young to test) but she is doing much better now. She sounds out, knows some sight words , etc. She struggles, though.

Every kid is different, and there is such a huge range of normal for kids starting kindergarten.

Re: can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?

For those that DC's can't read yet, do not panic! My almost 2nd grader could not read going into K maybe a few sight words. By the end of K she was reading. We discovered about a month ago that my daughter entering K can read. She was reading a Dr. Suess book to her brother and we assumed she had it memorized so we handed her a random book and she started reading it. We were shocked! In my family's case we did not expect our first to be reading going into K and with the second it was the same knowing that she would be reading by the end of K. However, I think my second wanted to be like her sister and she took more of an initiative always asking her pre-school teacher for homework.
