Re: can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?
My son had no reading skills going into kindergarten. He could barely write his own name. He will be going into 1st grade in September and he reads well. I'm shocked at how far he came and how much he learned in a year.

Nate was reading well when he went into K
Jayden knows his full name and some sight words, but that's it. He has no interest in learning. I know he knows stuff because when he thinks I'm not paying attention I discover he knows various words.

Re: can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?
DD will be going into Pre-K this sept. she can "read" 3 books now (has them memorized) she has known her name by sight for awhile now and knows most of her letters and the sounds they make by sight...still has some to work on. i know going into JK she will be ahead of most of the kids since she has a VERY early birthday. i am hoping they put her with the senior K kids and help her learn more.

Re: can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?
They are taught to read in K and should be reading a certain level by the end of K. Both of mine were reading in January of K (prior to this, I never heard them sit with a leveled book and actually read the words to me out loud). One just turned 5 and the other was 5.5 at that time of the school year.

Re: can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?
He was able to read some sight words by sept. In nov, he was already slowly reading booklets and stage 1. If I could do it over again, I would have done more sight words with him because I had no idea they already read in K and so many kids already were reading. He ended up being #2 at top level in his class at the end of K.

She knows sight words pretty well, her name, and can sound out simple words (4 letters or less) unless of course they have a silent K or something. Trying to teach DD how to read has rejuvenated my annoyance with the english language!!! Everytime I teach her a "rule" we come across a word that the rule doesn't apply

Re: can your DC who is about to enter kindergarten read?
DD was reading before kindergarten...her preschool taught sight words and she picked up on them easily and was always interested in reading. she will be in 2nd grade this year and is above grade level with reading...on a 3rd grade reading level.
DS on the other hand...very immature and lazy shows no interest in reading at all. He is starting kindergarten in Sept. he also attended the same preschool (had a different teacher than DD did) he can read his name and thats about it.
kids learn at their own pace...every child is different...i try not to compare my children they are totally different with almost everything!
kindergarten is a whole new world compared to preschool. Kids are not expected to know sight words entering kindergarten. its a bonus. Some children entering kindergarten, never stepped foot into a preschool, and its not required for kindergarten either. At orientation...it seemed as if they are more concerned the kids know their first and last name, address and phone number, colors, shapes and most important...how to wipe their own butt!
