Re: Car Safety Seat Inspection- get rid of it all!
BBB does not carry the posh pouch any longer (the woman I spoke to at BBB in Huntington actually thought it was being discontinued). Most of the websites that listed the posh pouch said it was out of stock, but I finally found it here:

Here is a question:
Since there appears to be a need - I am willing - with the permission of my dw - to offer a Saturday a month to 6 weeks apart for a check up. Is there an interest for me to do it?
Definitely!!

i would totally be interested, do you come out to eastern suffolk?
Or central Nassau? Or would you have workshops for first-timers at a separate location?
The location would be in Hicksville

So... newbie question here...
What do you do when you're traveling and are in an unfamiliar car? How do you know then that the seat is installed correctly?

Chris - I have a question as well.
The following is from the BRU website:
In line with JJ Cole's commitment to child safety, the Original Bundle Me has been tested to FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) 213 requirements. Tests performed on infant car seats with the JJ Cole Original Bundle Me installed found that the car seats complied with the Restraint System Integrity and Occupant Excursion portions of the FMVSS 213 requirements.
Does this mean that the new Bundle Me is ok to use now?
I was gonna post the same thing bc I just read that on a Bundle Me while I was shopping for a friend's shower.
Also, I think one statement that all "aftermarket" products are unsafe b/c they aren't tested by the seat manufacturers really doesn't make sense. I'm not throwing all this good info in the trash- I'm just saying that some companion products improve things and the statement that they're dangerous b/c they're not tested by a specific company doesn't make sense.
ETA I think saying these products haven't been officially deemed safe by any regulatory agency or car seat manufacturer would be a more fair statement.

When you attend a car seat check, the tech checking your installation should be showing you how to install your seat properly and explaining proper use.

This is the quote I made:
"The fact is simple - there is no test or standards for aftermarket products therefore they should not be used."
I never said anything about being tested by a specific company - I am stating that there are no standards or tests made for these products. In fact many car seat manufacturers specifically do not want any aftermarket products used with their seats at all.
The reason for my wording is that many of these products claim they are safe and have met federal standards. Since there are none - this is a false claim. Also, unles a product is made by Graco for Graco we cannot say a companion product makes things better.

Ok so I have to find a car seat check wherever I travel to? I guess that it's just a place you can go to anytime, well like any day? I'm sorry, I don't think I understand?

I want to clarify why techs and agencies refer to all aftermarket accessories as unsafe.
Some of these aftermarket products HAVE been shown to be unsafe though. See the photos posted of how a Bundle Me reroutes and interferes with a harness. It's unsafe for the harness not to properly secure your child, period. Same with aftermarket harness strap covers. They can be too large and force the chest clip down, or introduce slack, causing the harness not to properly secure your child.
Mirrors have actually injured many children and are a proven projectile, ditto for roller shades and other add on items that can come loose in a crash. Those things become projectiles in a crash and people HAVE been injured by them. The man in the video here suffered numerous facial fractures because of a low back booster that was unsecured. Those aren't exactly heavy either. http://kansascity.injuryboard.com/automobile-accidents/did-you-know-lose-items-in-your-car-can-become-deadly-projectiles-in-a-crash.aspx?googleid=283050
CPST's, NHTSA, Transport Canada and car seat manufacturers don't universally call these items unsafe for no good reason, it's because some HAVE been proven unsafe when in an accident. And, because unproven IS unsafe.
So, yes, the fact they haven't been deemed safe because they're not tested with the specific seat is partially true, it's also because real life data has been collected on many of these items to show that they are, in fact, dangerous. Because they are untested and unregulated it is impossible to differentiate any potentially "safe" product from a dangerous one, making the safest course of action to assume that ALL of these items pose a risk, or have your child and other vehicle occupants become crash test dummies.
Because your carseat's manual specifically tells you NOT to use unapproved items, coupled with a lack of regulatory oversight of these items, and given that their use alone outside a car doesn't cause the injury, no recall can be done. What I'm getting at is that it's perfectly safe to use a Bundle Me.... in a stroller.. in a swing.. in a bouncy chair. It's perfectly safe to use a mirror... in a crib, in a playpen.. The items themselves are not inherently dangerous (which, again, is why you won't see them recalled), it is the dynamics of a crash which makes them a danger to the occupants of a vehicle. A roller shade is perfectly fine in a vehicle until you are in an accident.. it's then that it becomes a danger, acting like a missile. (yes, a 4 oz shade in a 40mph crash? Force = speed X weight.. 4 x 40 = 160 oz.. that 4 oz item is going to hit you with a force of 10lbs. Would you toss a 10lb object at your head at 40mph?)
There actually are one or two aftermarket products which HAVE gone through the trouble to obtain specific car seat manufacturer approval by working with them and testing their products. In order to obtain approval, the testing has to be done by the aftermarket product manufacturer and done for all harness positions for all dummy weights, in each model seat etc, it's more than just one test on one seat in one harness position (which, BTW, is all JJ Cole did for the Bundle Me)

No, that would be impossible to do.
When you attend a car seat check, the tech should be reviewing with you how that seat installs. They should be showing you how to locate the LATCH anchors in a vehicle, how to properly secure the seat to the vehicle, how to properly secure your child etc. They should be showing how to check that the seat is installed correctly.
If you're in Nassau or can travel to Nassau (Hicksville) you can contact CarSeatSafety (Chris) and set up an appointment with him. You can also visit http://www.safekids.org/in-your-area/ and find a tech or event in your area if you can't get to see Chris.

What is being said is that whn you have your seat checked, ask the tech to explain how to place the seat in any car you may have or rent for the future.
Most people that come to see me do their second carsd themselves and bring them to me just to check. Learn how to do the seat and it should for the most part be placed in all cars the same.

Any of the "shower cap" style covers that go over the top but have nothing between baby and the seat are OK
Here's a few others

There are also the Car Seat Ponchos that are popular within the CPST/car seat enthusiast community.
